Dear all

I have inherited a 2002 bright yellow Punto Sporting in excellent condition. Only problem is that the engine is knackered and needs to be replaced. I intend to replace it with the same motor from another car (yet to source).

Are any parts of this engine coded to the ECU - i.e. can I simply remove it whole and then plug in a different engine? Any tips from people who have done this before or guides would be most welcome. I am a fairly experienced mechanic and have changed engines on other cars before but never a Fiat and know absolutely nothing about Fiats or this model either (other than I like it and think its worth saving).

Thanks in advance
Sam.

2002 with a 1.4 engine? dont believe it personally

the 1.4 16v engine didnt come into play till the Mk2b in 2004 ('53' plate)

As for plug and play yes and no

You will need to swap the engine ECU over
And possibly wiring loom too depending if you swap a early 16v to a later 16v

On a good note the engine loom does disconnect real easy - flip the Engine bay fuse box up and there is 1 big loom connector that allows the whole engine loom to be disconnected

If your getting a Same Spec punto and year - get the loom with it - it should be a straight plug and play
BAR having to fit the cars ORIGINAL ENGINE ECU

I repeat
YOU MUST KEEP THE CARS ORIGINAL ENGINE ECU
otherwise the Immboliser wont unlock and the new engine will NEVER start

make sure cambelt and waterpump swapped before fitting(y)
never fitted a 16 valve lump just ripped em out:D
as said make sure loom and ecu swap over for ease of convertability
also make sure exhaust comes with new engine in case its different to yours
sorry not much help

Thanks for your reply. Swap sounds simple.

On the issue of the year, its Gibraltar registered so from the plates I cannot see what it is (just says Gxxxxxx). I will check the paperwork. Point is whatever engine this is, is what will go back.

So you are still saying even if identical engine I must take the ECU from the doner engine car right. I have a photo of the engine actually and attach this so maybe you can identify it? The car may well be 2003 onwards, I just guessed at 2002.

Ensure yours is definatly a 1.4 engine

188A4000 = 1.2 8v
188A5000 = 1.2 16v
i THINK 188A1000 = 1.4 16v

As for the Cars ECU

The ""new engine to be fitted"" MUST HAVE THE ORIGINAL ENGINES ECU FITTED

If you fit the Donor Engine with the Donors Car ECU the immboliser WONT UNLOCK

If you fit the Donor Engine with the Cars ORIGINAL ECU it'll be fine once its adapts

As for the ECU on 16v, its the 2 big multi-plugs right next to the Inlet manifold

That looks like a 1.2 8v to me.

16v has coil packs
