What's involved and how hard is it to do?
Driving down M-way the other day and 2 stones chipped the centre of the windscreen and another hit just below the wiper causing a crack upwards several inches above the wiper now :(

I have a screen i can take from another car and change the 2 over but don't know how it's done

Easy :)

  • Remove trim around the wiper
  • Take out the old glass
  • Remove the old sealant
  • Clean glass, surrounding areas and heat sealant area well
  • Apply automotive bond
  • Put screen in
  • Replace trim (holds glass in position)
  • Refit rubber trim on sides and top to position right
  • Leave in dry area overnight

Job done (y)

It was either €120 to get it fitted or £14 for the automotive bond, no brainer! A guide might be on the cards alright :)

How does the old one come off without breaking?

2 ways I would do this:

  • Heat gun with knife or
  • Hot piano wire (recomended)

Its very tedious doing it with a heat gun and knife/ hacksaw blade and I deffo dont recomend this with a windscreen. Best to buy or get lend of a piano wire and cut it out that way. Never take the screen out cold or it will break, heat it well first

Knife is a bad idea as the paint can get damaged. Rust in the screen area will do serious damage before you see anything.

Heat the screen with a fan heater inside the car with thermostat set high so the interior gets really warm. New screen can be dropped in place and covered with dust sheets while it warms up.

To fit the new screen need a garage (as wind will rapidly cool the glass)
The glue sets really fast so you need to be well organised. Glass sucker handles help loads
