Right guys, My brothers other half has a 2001 MK2 which, unfortunately has developed an oil leak from the flywheel end of the engine. Its not gear oil so dont have too much to worry about but it is a problem thats not going to cure itself.

So my question is, whats the chances of the rear crank oil seal failing, or could it be just a simple re-seal of the sump gasket, or is there anything else that it can be? As I've said, its not gear oil, so gearbox is fine for the time being.

had this on our diesel hgt at about 80k miles I think the seal was about £27 even though its a simple part. the removing gearbox flywheel etc was the expensive bit. you might also need to consider a new clutch, even if its fine it may be worth doing while the cars in bits save labour in the future

Getting the flywheel off is the going to be the labourous bit there....

Stripping down - and then rebuilding

It'd be handy/cheaper if you knew how todo it yourself

While the g.box is off - defo make sure the input shaft doesn't have any play in it
If it does - sort it now before it goes again....

ziggy

Wasn't really planning on doing it myself as I don't have a ramp or pit. However, I wont be the first to remove a gearbox kerbside.

Kim (The owner of the car) says she doesn't really want to put a clutch in it but might just have too. Lets hope its not needing a 'box aswell.

Andy, Can you remember what type of seal it is? Lip-type seal?

It was on a 1.9 multijet diesel so it could well be completely different. It was a flat rubber seal imbedded in a chunk of unusually shaped, pressed steel is thats of any use

i remember when on my turbo engine the oil started to leak badly, with me having a paddle clutch upgrade for the turbo i was on edge thinkin that engine oil get to the clutch plate, thank goodness its dry!
i remember the seal must be central to the crankshaft otherwise it will leak again ........cost me £27 from the dealers

how often do people change oil and filter, not often enough causing oil seals to go hard and not seal, you could try buying an engine oil treatment for the seals that do help slow down the leak, worth considering until your clutch goes, punto clutches are crap as the bearing saws through the teeth of pressure plate,so keep foot off resting on clutch pedal(y)

Its my brothers other half (Girlfriend) that owns the car. Might just have to get her to go in and order the seal, seems not to be a lip type seal, unusual.

Andy, The seal will be different as the diesel block and crack will be larger than the 1.2 petrol.

Azzam, how do you mean "Central". I thought it wouldn't matter as long as the crank is bolted up it will be central? Might be like a rear gearbox seal on a truck 'box. Will have to wait and see.

Thanks for the info on the clutch, but its going to be changed. The car is going through something like 5 litres in about 8 weeks so needs done if she is keeping the car.

So you guys think about the £90 for parts? (£27 for the seal and £60-65 for the clutch (Q&H clutch))

1.2 8 valve?
done a few of these seals now
dont go to dealer they want £36
go to andrew pages and pay £12
once flywheel off its easy to change
they go with age
