It's more than tolerable for a roadtrip IMHO I actually didn't mind my 80 mile daily commute that i was doing up until a couple of weeks ago. Getting almost 60mpg out of the 500 sure was fun

60 mpg !! that is fantastic and to be jealous about I was talking more about putting the car into cruise say at 90 and sitting back. At 90 the TA is noisy and driving 200 miles plus makes it a bit tiring to concentrate.
see.. even you gave up the commute as you were getting tired... got you
you can't compare Z4 to 1.2 500, two different cars.
You will miss the Z4 for the high speed cruising, although sustainable in a 1.2 it does get tiring as I just found out after a 2000 miles trip around Europe in a TA. But the fun factor is there when you get off motorways to join side roads
I actually didn't like the Z4 for long distance driving . A couple of years ago we drove a 12 hour round trip from Glasgow to Lincolnshire to collect our new puppy and it was a thoroughly miserable journey . I made the mistake of choosing a Z4 with M sport suspension and 18 inch alloys , the ride was intolerably firm and also the tyres chucked up a lot of road noise , this combination made the journey so tiresome . It was my only mode of transport and it was a very hard car to live with every day .
Having said that it did have a fantastic engine , I liked the sharp styling and was fun to zoom away from traffic lights etc .
I haven't driven the 500 long distance yet but I am driving to visit friends in Guildford in October so it will be interesting to see how it compares . I'm not really a fast driver so I won't be cruising at 90 anyway !

Given the M tech suspension and the 18inch alloys it sounds like you had the 6 cylinder engine which was a very smooth engine. The 2.5L engine was at one stage world ranked in the top 10 engines. It was also one of the most economical 6 cylinder engines.

Last week I mentioned to the OH to do a trip over to Switzerland for a week or so in the 500 and she said to me - 'Are you mad - in your car'. Last night she was on driver's duty and when she parked the car in the garage she said the 500 (she normally drives a Mito MJ 1.6) was 'a bit like a toy car and you're a bit high up'. It was just after midnight so I didn't engage.
But my experience of the 1.4 is that it's a great car and comes on cam nicely at high motorway speeds but I haven't done a 2000 mile round trip in one. I suppose you can't win them all.
This is a great time to do Switzerland, you will love the drive in the 500 we had no complaints at all. You will loose a day on each end maybe fly and hire a car, anyway you have 2 good cars and it's more fun driving there

I had a day off today so I took my neice, my sisters labrador and our Boston Terrier on an 88 mile round trip to Croy bay in Ayrshire today which has one of the most beatuiful stretches of winding road in Scotland with a lovely beach also . I was very pleased at how the 500 coped with motorway speeds and It felt very refined . ( Although that may have had something to do with my neice blasting out Lady Gaga at full volume covering up the engine noise ! ) I am now looking forward to my road trip to Guildford in October and i'm sure it will be fine !

Yes it was a 2.5 litre engine that I had in the Z4 , it made a great noise and it loved to be revved , but next time I wouldn't have 18 inch runflats or the M sport suspension . Other than that it 's a great car for weekend driving but not for daily use . I liked it but I didn't love it the same way that I do my 500 and I can't really explain why ! The 500 has a feelgood factor in bucketloads and that is lacking in so many boring generic looking cars nowadays .
