Technical Oil Grade ??

Technical Oil Grade ??

Ach just my sense of humour. I'm an old petrol head , but I'm at the life's too short stage. It is good to exchange information. Forums can be curious places at times, there are moments I wonder who's behind the keyboard...

The thing is, just saying "lol" without even quoting another posting gives us no clue what it is that you have found funny, or why.

It doesn't really add value.

The thing is...I never realised this sort of thing was set in stone.:D Life is full of disappointments it would seem. No offence to the forum, but it is just a place to discuss all that's vehicle related in the Fiat world & other matters arising, whether they be serious or not. Personally I've always tried to make my vehicle acquainted experiences as up beat, fun & generally an all round good event.:)

Well you will never guess what I found in ASDA for £20 :slayer:

wow hoo :p

After seeing this post and after visiting my local store the other day, I made a point of emailing the above branded supermarket Customer Service Team to find out who supplies their oil. I've just received a telephone call this morning from a very nice guy who stated that for legal reasons (confidentiality agreement) between their supplier and them, they are not permitted to tell me, the customer, who the supplier is. :bang:

Oh well, big sigh! I'll be sticking with known brands in the future.

Oil snobbery, alive, well and kicking! :p

It's quite fair enough though, as that supplier still wants to be able to sell the same oil under their 'known brand', to you, at a higher price ;) thus reinforcing the oil snobbery, as you said (y)

On a car that's worth as much as the 500, I'll be using the Selenia oil - I think it's Selenia Star for mine - keep in mind that there are lots of versions of Selenia these days.

Selenia KPE for all petrol non-Abarth 500's :)

This thread probably should be renamed Oil Grade for a Diesel ?? so as not to confuse it with the petrol engined 500s.
For anyone looking for oil for the petrol engined 500 or T-jets here is the last thread (As Maxi has pointed out the A500 are excluded). I'm not too sure if I'll be paying the price being asked for a Selenia KPE ever again and would expect that I would be able to source a oil that is preferably Ester Synthetic or at least Ester based. On a F500 1.4 (not the Multi-air) I would run a semi-synthetic for around 3000 miles at the early states to accelerate break-in and then switch to a fully synthetic.

When I checked the manual on the 155TB it listed the Selenia Star and then I recognised that the oil used on the last 500 was exactly that even though I had paid for Selenia KPE (remembered the colour on the 'top up' 1L bottle).

Checking the recommendation on oil on the Selenai web site and comparing the 2 synthetics I could not see the differences in them.

Halfords has a sale on this week on the Castrol Turbo diesel oil which meets the Fiat approval spec for the petrol engine.

That actually is a really good price. I've just had a look around 'tinernet' and can't find it cheaper. I have a 15 quid Halfords voucher from Christmas. I'm now very tempted to put it toward this oil and keep it until I need it.

One thing that always confuses me is that Castrol do two 5w40 oils which are both ACEA C3 ones.

There's the one that loveshandbags has linked to above which is branded as Turbo Diesel oil and then there's just plain Castrol Edge 5w40. I bought the non-TD branded stuff incidently. Looking at the Castrol site if recommends the non-TD stuff, that said it also recommends Transmax Dex III Multivehicle for the power steering :ROFLMAO:

Yup, looking at the technical info there doesn't appear to be any difference :) I think perhaps they just want to differentiate between Alfa and Fiat oil for some inexplicable reason.

I found another oil from Comma in a local supplier and it meets the 5W40 ACEA C3 spec and it's labelled Turbo Diesel. It was €60 ! Seems most petrol engines now have a slightly thinner viscosity and the 5W40 is generally for Diesels. On the Castrol the oil labelled 'Castol Edge' & 'Castrol turbo diesel' is EXACTLY the same oil - the latter is cheaper - this was covered before in previous threads.

Back on topic on using the 'right' oil for the multi-jet (Diesel)...this was the feedback from the OILMAN on going outside the ACEA spec...

with the cars that have DPFs, don't mess about, put in something that meets the spec, especially ones that are under warranty.

If the DPFs get blocked, it will cost you a whole lot more than you save by buying a cheaper oil.

When I compared the technical characteristics PDF on the Selenia site there was minute (hope I spelt that correctly;)) differences on the Density at 15deg and viscosity at 100 deg and the pour point was ever so slightly different. You wonder if there's a different additive in it ?
Also I've seen a picture somewhere on the FF of Selenia labelling the KPE ? can with the word Multiair.
It's no wonder that punters get confused.:)

Well this is very interesting, the oil specks according to the Haynes manual.

Petrol Engine.

Multigrade engine oil, fully - synthetic, viscosity SAE 5w/40 or 10w/40 to ACEA A3 and API SL or better. Fiat classification 9.5535-S2

Diesel Engine.

Multigrade engine oil, fully - synthetic, viscosity SAE 5w/30 or 5w/40 to ACEA B4 and API CF or better*. Fiat classification 9.5535-S1

* On engines with a particulate filter, use low ash oil; consult a dealer for a suitable type.

Haynes Manual be wrong...... Why are you consulting the Haynes Manual when you've presumably already got the handbook?
