Technical Oil Grade ??

Technical Oil Grade ??

Well for what it's worth I nipped into FIAT today to have a word with their service manager...

It would appear that after the Service manager conferred be realised that the revised C2-2010 spec had the ‘wear properties’ of the C3. He may not have realised the 'economy tag' of the C2 spec and given that your car is out of warranty he has no exposure.

Is this the best that you can do ? :D

But what makes the info from the various links provided so reliable??

If you check out the first post on the oil thread the response (#176) I got back from the query (#174) wasn't given lightly. I would be lying if I said that Tim conferred with an oil expert but you could ask him. The responses from Castrol & the Halfords technical team were 'lifted' 'as is' with no changes.

Below is an excellent summary from JR which you might have missed earlier on in the thread...

.... I don't think the issue is so much about mechanical wear as about protecting all the hi-tech devices a modern engine needs to achieve its economy & emissions performance. Using the wrong oil probably won't wreck the bearings, but you just might find you need to fork out for a new DPF/cat/lambda sensor or whatever when you next visit an MOT station.

Unless you want to spend a huge amount of time researching the subject in great depth AND are prepared to use your car as an experimental vehicle, I'd suggest simply sticking to the specification (though not necessarily the brand) given by the manufacturer.

Thought you might like to use this as a replacement avatar since I sense an oil change is imminent.:)

Oil has already been replaced. And as DPF filter will be fine with C3 oil as will the cat I will continue to use the cheapest stuff I can fine as long as its up to C2 or C3 spec

Oil can be rather confusing and thats because there are many choices and brands to choose from all telling you theirs is the best:bang:, i get my oil from opie oils as they can also supply motorsport oil and the normal stuff

There's no confusion on the type of oil used for a diesel. Some members still want to use their own oil even when a clear case is put forward that it's the WRONG oil to use.:p

I suppose it depends on who's telling you its the wrong oil, conflict of interest etc, dealer trying to sell their own make, indi trying to use their own cheap bulk purchase oil:rolleyes:

Just ordered myself some 5w-40 C3. Funny enough its branded as Ford oil, but thats what i found locally in Greece! Ford Formula S/SD SAE 5W40 1Lt! As long as the specs are the same shouldnt be a problem. I am going to service in about 8000 miles but i think i need 0.5 liters so i will just top it up for the time being until the service, especially since the 1.4 likes its oil!
12 euros a liter with 23% vat and delivery included, still cheaper than 20 euros a liter at the petrol stations,.

Did you order it from here ?
They have it in 5L containers reduced and they also have the Castrol Magnatec which has the Fiat approval 9.55535.S2 and all you need is 3L.;)
If you change to newer oil it's less likely to get used up so you wouldn't be using as much.
When I was in a local Ford dealership (Harmonstown) recently getting mats & they only sold the one 'Ford' oil and it was a 5w30 ACEA A5/B5 and it was used on all the cars including the new KA.

Yes i got it from there! I think for my full fat service i'll get hold of a 5lt one and keep the remainder in storage to use as top up.

For a 1.2 and 1.4 you need 2.8L & 2.9L so you can buy the exact amount
TwinAir IIRC is 3.2L

If you wanted a Class IV oil - Amsoil do a 5W40.

You're not supposed to 'mix' oils. The ESP oil is suitable for the Multi-jet but it has not got Fiat approval.
In theory you shouldn't use it in the 1.2 but if you were stuck it would be better than being low on oil.

This would be against the recommendation of the manufacturer but some have used 10W40 semi-synthetic to help quicken up the breaking in of an engine for a 'short period' like 3K miles but it would NOT be advisable in a Multi-air engine. Unsure if it can be got in a ACEA C3 spec. If it's outside the ACEA spec it will probably affect the CAT.

This is the official listing of oils done by Selenia and a suitable oil can come under different names ! This is marketing i.e. specific oil for alfa and one for fiat but it's the same oil. There is now a new one with the name multi-air on it that's not listed.

Selenia Star Pure Energy
Selenia K P.E.
Selenia Star
(double check that all of the above are 5w40, ACEA C3 & FIAT 9.55535-S2)

For Diesel engines it is 5w30 ACEA C2 & FIAT 9.55535-S1

I asked my mechanic and he told me as long as there is a 40 at the end its fine, so 0w-40, 5w-40 and 10w-40 are all acceptable.
