Recently been using the Ryco Z516ST which is a filter for full synthetic oil. Recently here in NZ I noticed a large increase in the price of oil filters so i'm curious on other suitable brands that may be cheaper.

Has anyone been happy using the FRAM XG2 (photo: https://media-www.canadiantire.ca/p...n.jpg?imdensity=1&imwidth=1244&impolicy=mZoom)

On another site that does oil filter cross references:
I have preference to using Iveco brand filters but supplier just wants double the price when compared to the typical retail superstore offering. Thoughts if the FRAM XG2 being a compatibility problem? (note i've been happy using the FRAM Ultra Guard XG line of oil filters us my petro cars).

Buy from SuperCheap Auto when on special. Reading reviews, I dont know whether the ST filter is any better or whether its hype. I,m in NZ also.

Difficult for us to comment from Europe. More of our stuff is euro made. I googled oil filters a while ago and there ARE substantial differences in what is inside the filters. Maybe google filter performace comparisons and see what your side of the world comes up with. Beware of counterfeits.

@96Coaster: KiaOra! Supercheap had a 20% discount Boxing Day sale yesterday but found the price is not that much of a bargain considering how fast prices have gone up over the years (blame it on inflation). I'm convinced the ST filter is superior to their standard filter.

In a post I made many many years ago on this topic of oil filters, I wanted to stay with the original Iveco oil filter (part# 504091563) but was discontinued and replaced with a Fiat part# 8094872. Both filters appeared to be different in the # of holes, mesh and pattern inside, etc. So I went with the belief that a 'better' oil filter made for longer oil change intervals. Most of the legacy brand oil filters have not changed their filter designs, who made their filters based on 5,000 mile interval oil changes. Today, the modern car it's like 10,000 miles or in the Fiat Ducato's case, over 12,000 miles between oil changes. The use of full synthetic oil created much longer intervals between oil changes but the 'over the shelf' oil filter quality you can buy on various legacy brands may have not adjusted for this longer interval.

Of course if your plan is to change oil after doing 5000 miles, then oil filter quality may not be an issue. Myself I find it a huge pain to remove the under cover (so many screws and fixings) - I actually don't really look forward to do oil changes while on my other vehicles, I don't mind. So far the Ducato has done 94,000 kms.

@96Coaster - what brand and type of oil are you using?

As vehicle was still under warranty, initial oil change was done by Fiat agent ( dont know what brand of oil he used, expensive bill said "Petronas"). Since then I have done my own oil and filter changes. Ryco filters and Penrite 0W-30 C2. Change every 12 months.

I'm in Christchurch and both Fiat Agents (well the Fiat dealer and their RV division & servicing 'CMG Camper') informed me that they do not have Petronas oils in stock saying "Due to supply chain issues". Instead they are using the Total brand for oils which i've used in the past and did not believe it was anything special. On a new vehicle under warranty it may not matter what brand is used as long as the same oil specification.

My Ducato is a 2013 which I imported direct to NZ (brand new but so did not have the benefit of a local 3 year warranty). In the early years I changed oil every 12 months (usually doing only 10,000 kms / year). Found it wasteful (the level of 'blackness' on paper towel test) and went to 18 month intervals. Speaking of intervals, how about the Ducato computer ? Mid way in our trip last month, (odo about 92,000kms) the display dash nagged me to change the oil. But the oil had less then 4,000 kms so it must be some dumb trip metre. I watched on YouTube the newer Ducatos to reset this oil change nag you need to use the Fiat software and can't be done using the press the brake / accelerator pedal to clear the nag. We live in a very complicated life nowadays. 😐

What is this paper towel test anyinfo?

This can also be done with MES And Alfaobd

Nothing scientific. Black oil means nothing but not all black is the same (when used oil is recycled, they take away the black and what ever impurities). Few drips of the used oil on the paper towel and you can see how much of the oil dissipates.

Specialised software for every DIY Fiat owner should buy? GM has a proper oil life meter in their vehicles that actually records driving habits (not just a silly date or how many clicks on the odometer that I see in my Ducato) to determine the life of the oil. Also no specialised OBD2 software and tools to reset when you changed the oil.

Try CoolDrive auto parts in Christchurch for Petronas oils. They have a good range and are direct importers.
They also have Tutela CS Speed fluid for Fiat/Alfa robotized gearbox actuator. (Don't tell them but their price for this is very reasonable!)
