Technical Oil change warning light

Zakt, look at it this way. Lets say you have your oil changed at 12k when the light comes on and then a couple of months later you get it in for its yearly service, are you going to change the oil again and waste perfectly good oil? IMHO you'd be silly to do that.

It was bought from a Fiat Dealer, but serviced at another Dealer?
No same fiat dealer colchester like I said nov 09 service 10750 just says service in book dont say any thing about oil change only for the book being stamped.
They arranged the service (and sold it as having been serviced), or did you arrange the service?
I did not arrange any service I only got the car from fiat web page as approved fiat car colchester with 11450 miles on clock . I went from rochdale 450 miles round trip as I said I was experting fully serviced car till nov10 so every thing should been ok .
As a approved fiat car 28 days exchange or 1000 mile plan

This whole diesel service, DPF oil change is one giant mess.
You can have the car serviced without and oil change, serviced with an oil change, oil change withou a service. Oil change at anywhere between 2.5K miles - 2yrs depending on how you drive. Pay for an oil change then have the software patch applied so it doesnt keep throwing up a warning light. Oil changed without resetting the degredation meter. Degredation meter reset without an oil change (if you beleive they changed the oil).

Now isnt it fairly obvious why people get confused !

If i bought a car and it threw up oil warning light just after I bought it and after it had been service I would be pissed off too.

I'm sorry but that post doesn't seem to make much sense.

Right, things are a little clearer now-

You live in Rochdale and bought the 500 from a Fiat Dealer in Colchester who sold it as having had a service. About 1000 miles later the oil change light is on and the Dealer in Colchester says they did change the oil, but must have forgotten to reset the oil degradation counter, so rather than have you travel back to them, they recommend getting your local Dealer to reset the warning light.

Obviously without proof of the oil change your local Fiat Dealer (Rochdale) aren't willing to risk resetting the light with the possibilty of old oil in the engine, and they sure as hell aren't going to correct someone else's mistake for free (remember, Fiat do not 'own' the Dealers- fiat build the cars and businesses buy the franchise to sell and fix them).

Doesn't it sound simpler with a little bit of clarification and punctuation?

Get the Colchester Dealer to fax the proof of the service (and oil change) to your local Dealer, along with an agreement that they (Colchester Fiat) will pay the Examiner labour charge to reset the light- then take it to the Rochdale Dealer for the work. Job done.

After about 2/3 days of long talks to local dealer and where I got the car from they finally reset the oil light F.O.C

Hello, Had my car serviced at my local garage as the oil change light came on at exactly a year to the day since the last service but they could not reset it....searched online and found Sealey now make a tool VS8623 for the job. Still a little expensive at £214.00 inc VAT but useful for all the independents garages.

I am not sure about the oil change intervals.

Not sure about diesel, but you have to change the oil every 18K miles or two years on the petrol version regardless of what the oil display says. If you do less than 4K a year you have to have an oil change to mantain the warranty anyway.

The OP light came on due to time, not any measurement of oil quality.

I am really not convinced you can do 36K in a diesel without a oil change and keep the warranty.

Petrol engine does not monitor oil degradation
Diesel engine "Oil degraded" light does not use a timer

For the sake of argument, not sure the diesel engine actually monitors degradation directly, suspect it monitors number/progress of DPF regens and various other parameters and estimates based on that. But that is just informed speculation on my part. Edit: Page 2 of this thread confirms that.

Although the petrol oil change intervals can also be confusing, but that's another thread!

Your not wrong there, it took about a month to figure out the service requirements if you only did 1500 miles a year.

The interesting thing is the dealer pointed out that the low mileage was a recommended list of things to do. But strictly speaking it should only be every 2 years assuming you do more than 4K but less than 9K a year. If less than 4K a year you need a oil change, but if it is 4010 miles for example, no oil change and just a service every 24 months.

How confusing is that.
