Numerous issues with my three year old Fiat500 star! Mileage of 16.000 and has just failed it's MOT! This is the third time it's required parts which aren't available!! Fed up being placated by customer services now and rapidly losing patience. Is there a head office or another number one can ring/email to get some answers please?

Model
Fiat 500 star
Year
1921
Mileage
16000
Without seeing the Mot emission fail points, it may have just needed a good blast for 30 miles or so to clear the cobwebs out and get it fully warmed up.
Just a thought and assuming no error /warning lights up , it may be worth giving it a "spirited run" and taking it to a basic Mot Station, one of my old customers used to take her car to the local Council Depot as they did public Mots as well as their own and had no axe to grind as didn't do any public repairs, just Mots.
We had one of those down in Musselburgh. It was council run and seemed to look after the hearses too. Didn't do any repairs and you had to take the vehicle away after the test even if it failed. Quite strict standards but absolutely fair. They never failed one I took down there that wasn't warranted. Closed now unfortunately.

Thank you! That's very interesting. Unfortunately, my car is still at the dealership where it had the MOT. I wasn't allowed to drive it home after it failed the MOT so I now have to wait until they can find the parts, repair it and then MOT it again. The compressor has also gone in the air-con so they need to sort that too. The whole thing is a disaster and I am so disappointed. 😞
Has anyone bothered to tell you you must use aircon frequently to keep it functioning. If you have it turned off most of the time the seals dry out and the refrigerant leaks away. Once that happens - the seals drying out I mean - it's quite unlikely that a regas will hold for long and it's not unussual to find a new compressor is needed. I often found customers with this problem were reluctant to run their air con often enough (I'd say at least once a week for say 15 to 30 minutes) because they didn't need to keep cool in the car. The internal temperature in the car has nothing to do with the air con being active, that's controlled by the heater controls. You can have the air con switched on - so the refrigerant is circulating - but with the heater control set to hot so you are "nice and toasty" inside. It was very common to have folk coming in for a recharge at the beginning of the summer because they'd never had the air con switched on since the start of the summer before and, of course, all the refrigerant was gone. Sometimes they'd get away with a recharge and sometimes not.

Edit. Air con is big business these days so there are many good OE quality options for parts. I'm a little surprised they're having problems sourcing stuff. In my experience you can walk into almost any trade factoring business and get most of the parts for these cars you'd need. Maybe not actually branded FIAT, but very good quality non the less.

PS. So sorry to hear of your troubles. You're most unfortunate. It's not been my experience over many years of running, mainly, Pandas.

Thank you for all the information on air-cons. I had absolutely no idea that it would have been beneficial to run the air-con regularly but I won't be making that mistake again! I think, that because it's being repaired at a Fiat dealership, they will presumably only use Fiat parts and that's where the problem lies. Sourcing parts for Fiat 500's in the UK is a massive problem....my alternator last year had to come from Italy!! Why they do not have a ready supply of parts in this country is beyond my understanding.Thank you again for your help ...much appreciated.

Not just FIAT. Last year the gearbox in my relatively low mileage (30,000 miles), but out of warranty, Ibiza decided to "eat" it's final drive on the M5. So there we were - Mrs J was with me - far from home with a car which wouldn't go. Luckily we got it to the local SEAT dealer near Mrs J's sister (our intended destination) where they confirmed the gearbox was "toast" and I agreed to them fitting a new SEAT rebuilt box. Shock, horror, the nearest one is in Germany! Took best part of a week to get to them and then they took a day and a half to fit it - which actually I thought wasn't too shabby. SEAT and the dealer themselves gave me a "goodwill" third reduction in the bill but it was still a lot of money.
