A bit sad I realise, but I wondered what the best anyone has managed is?

Recently, with the nicer weather (air con running though) I've been seeing 76mpg indicated, on my daily 62-mile round-trip, obviously in reality the average is somewhat less due to the roughly per-tank DPF regen and the computer being a little optimistic.

What's the most miles you've managed on a whole tank? I've never managed to get much more than 400 out of my 1.2 but that's mainly because I have to let the wife use it too!

Nice:)

Continuing this sad theme, it does give me the opportunity to post my best 100 mile trip computer mpg figures to date:

I've had 501 miles out of a tank :)

In 1992, I drove a Renault 5 from London to Inverness on a tank of fuel - a shade over 570 miles. That car held 43 litres & IIRC trip mpg was about 62.5. The last bit is mostly downhill & I can still remember the anxiety of wondering if it'd make it without running out of fuel:).

I ran out at 501 miles in the snow *facepalm*

Ditto. These are some 'real world' figures from a return trip mid-week from Dublin -> Belfast with quite a bit of city driving (20%) in both places. Sensible driving going up (100-120kph) but the roads were more or less empty coming back (120kph-130kph). This in a thirsty Euro 4 1.4 with Contis on 16s in a fairly fresh engine. The average mpg readout in Mallusk (far side of Belfast) was 46mpg but the average didn't drop that much on the gallop home. Nothing compared with the Multijet or even JRs amazing MPGs but I was quite impressed with these figures.

P.S. The A500SS that I test piloted had an average of 32.6mpg and this car wouldn't be exactly hanging about.

EDIT: Have you seen the kind of figures that can be expected on the new 1.4 multi-air - I would think that it easily competes on fuel efficiency with the likes of the 1.2 / TA / MJ

at present i get about 49.7 to 55.3 mpg on my 95bhp multijet as i drive on motorways every day and i drive at 80s as im always late for work lol

That is becoming a characteristic of motorway driving now at 80-85mph and to be getting 50mpg+ is very impressive. I wonder why the Autocar cost per mile for the MJ II is at 37p per mile which is the same for the thirstier 1.4 petrol. The 1.2 is appreciably cheaper at 31/32p per mile.

By coincidence after starting this thread, best yet today. Same 62 mile round trip, climate control still on auto - 78.8mpg for the round-trip per the display.

Car has 16's with Eagle F1s and 35k on the clock.

Read something on an 'economy' page and they stated that if you driving mainly around the town petrol was more preferable than diesel but on the open road diesel is the one.

I wonder what you could have got if you hadn't had those 'high' rolling resistance tyres. :)

It's not that I don't believe you  - but can you post any pics showing distance, average mph and the 78.8mpg. :)

I always reset trip-A when I get home, as it takes so long in the morning scrolling though all the messages. But the trip-B is looking pretty good too - it last regen'd just before I refueled, so there is a chance I wont see a regen this tank, in which case I might let it run to 500 miles.

Thanks for that pearce. Noticed the average mph down at 33mph but I won't take that way from you :). The OHs Mito with her 1.6 MJ is brillant on juice (not as good as yours) until I get behind the wheel (averaged 49.x mpg) . It takes a lot of concentration to get the kind of mpg that yourself and JR can get.

It takes quite a few miles of more economical motoring to offset the increased capital cost of the 95hp MJII

Thanks for that JR. Autocar probably used a typical 10K mile a year driver. I reckon you would have to be doing 15K mile a year to justify both the power from the MJ II and the economy that it can give - to bring down the 'artificially' high cost per mile. In Ireland diesel is cheaper that petrol at a typical average of €1.43 a litre compared with €1.49 on petrol. There is the odd garage that only supply diesel and it is at a 'knock down' price of €1.40 a litre. Noticed in the UK diesel is priced higher than petrol.
In Ireland the 500 MJ are no longer sold because they were too pricey and very few of them sold.

...both the power from the MJ II and the economy that it can give...

It's the combination of the two that justifies buying the car. If you need to do a lot of motorway miles at speed then a petrol car won't come anywhere close. The 1.2 petrol can deliver close to the economy of the diesel, but only if you restrict your speed to 50-55mph. Drive a modern diesel that way & it'll likely choke on its own DPF.

So it's the 1.2 if you're a low mileage ecoDriver, the 1.3MJII if you're pounding the motorways, and the 1.4/twinAir if you want a fun, drivers car.

Well summarised JR. It's doesn't do to be getting too much eco mileage on a MJ.

I had a look at another section of the forum - the GPs with their debate on which was the better - the MJ (turbo diesel) or the T-jet (turbo petrol). What I concluded from the 'debate' :) was that the MJ was better. In the 500 there is justification for the T-Jet because of the size of the car - putting in a MJ can affect the balance because of the extra weight. That said if motorways is what you have to 'get up & down on' the MJII is the one if its the 500 you're after. The 'MJ I' (75bhp) that I did drive was interesting but I could see how the II could be the icing on the cake.

An empty wallet helps!

Unfortunately the DPF regenerated yesterday, but I very nearly matched the figures from the other day today, it dropped down from 78.8 as I reversed onto the drive  I realise there is probably some sceptacism over my claimed numbers so I thought I'd post this...
