It's not that quick as you also need to change the bearing liners in the casing. The difference of £600 is way more than the casing cost, hence the fact they do re-use parts to make saving.

Nothing wrong with that but it's not all new I can assure you.

There's various reasons for it to be cheaper. Including:

1. The stigma attached to the term 'Reconditioned' (face it- if it was the same cost as a new box, or probably more due to the extra testing, which version do you think the Dealer would go for?)
2. The fact that Fiat have put a HUGE and unnecessary mark-up on new 'boxes. When I first started in 1999, a recon box was £300 and a completely new unit only £100-200 more. Now a gearbox is priced around £1200 (for essentially the same as what came out of a mk2 Punto 10 years ago)! This is Fiat's way of getting the Dealer to go for stripping and replacing synchro's/gears under warranty, rather than the old practice of fitting a recon box and leaving Fiat to rebuild the old unit.

Has the cost of manufacturing the gearsets and bearings really quadrupled in price?

Warranty replacement of a gearbox with a remanufactured unit may be acceptable in a car that's, say, 18 months old. In a car that's only covered 34 miles from new, I'd say replacing a new major component with a remanufactured one costing £600 less is perilously close to my definition of a scam.

Well said that man.(y)[/QUOTE]

Dead right. If it was my new car with 34 miles on the clock, I'd expect a brand new gearbox. No less.

Err, still waiting people. Yesterday was a month since I took the car back to the dealer!!!
I know for a fact that the gearbox was ordered on the 22nd, was in Italy (allegedly) on the 23rd and in Warrington on the 30th awaiting delivery to the dealer on the 31st. . .By the time I get this car back the 61 plates will be on the road, Fiat would have stopped producing the 500 and the coalition Government in the UK would have been voted out of office . . .

. . .we might get someone in government that would break less promises
Not wanting to get into a political argument here as it's not the place, but there's no chance, they're all liars. Check out Capt Ska singing Liar Liar on Youtube - very funny!

Ahh, thing is, the longer it takes them to sort, the more ammunition I have to fire. Andrew Humberstone is well aware of the situation - although I'm still waiting for a response from him - I wrote him a corking stinkergram and I wasn't very complimentary either. Mentioned going to the motoring press along with some other stuff. . .
The dealer said that they were expecting the box to be delivered on New Years Eve and set aside time to fit it and get the car out - its embarrassing for them and inconvenient. I've put nigh on a 1000 miles on their car, which is mileage I haven't put on my 500!! (y)

It's actually laughable that in this day and age, where the cost of things is so high and businesses are fighting for your custom that (and I quote from Fiat's own website) "the 6th largest motor manufacturer in the world "can treat it's customers like this.

Big question is next time round would I buy another one - Well fellow fiat Forumers, that very much depends on how this gets resolved and I don't mean resolved with a new gearbox!

Re: I'm somewhat disappointed! No, change that to Hurrah!!

Ladies and Gentelmen, Boys and Girls, Children of all ages. Pray Silence for Greyskull's 500 with a brand new gearbox.

Yep, it's here but thanks to Fiat, It's taken 1 month, 3 days or to put it another way. . . . 34 days or approx 816 hours or 4 8,960 minutes or 2,937,600 seconds!!

This time I've driven more than 35 miles, no bang or extraneous noises - so far so good. . .have to say it is a nice drive (y)

A shame it took so long, but I suppose if one was generous you could lop at least a week off that time if it wasn't for the festive season and the snow.

I presume that you have been adequately compensated for your trouble.

Now go enjoy the thing.

Cheers

That Dear Fiat Forumers is still under discussion . . .I'll keep you all informed, after all, you have shared this journey with me!

Re: I'm somewhat disappointed! No, change that to Hurrah!!

Well, I can finally bring this chapter to a close.
I have now been in possession of the car for over a week now, no rattles, bangs, squeaks or clonks from anywhere. The Blue&Me seems to be working just fine and I have to say I just love driving that car. . .

As far as Fiat goes, the 1st offer of a free service was rejected and the 2nd offer of servicing for 2 years plus another remote key (The key alone must be £150+ retail) was accepted. I may have been able to push for more but IMOP whats been offered is fair.

At the risk of sounding like an Oscars acceptance speech, I want to thank the people at Fiat's customer care team and also the service dep't at Glynn Hopkin in Buckhurst Hill, Essex - Both worked together to resolve my issue. The only downside to all this was the plank at Fiat warranty who sent down a recon' box . . and the time it took to resolve - hey ho, can't have it all perfect can you . . .
Oh and thanks to all you fellow Fiat Forumers too for all your input. :worship:

Now the only problem left is to name the car – my missus says it needs a name. Anyone have any suggestions – preferably clean please!!

Good stuff :) A fair offer I reckon.

After reading the 11 pages of pain there the car could only be called "Patience" I think. That really is disgusting customer service either from the dealer or Fiat Italy. At least you have your car though.
