It's not that quick as you also need to change the bearing liners in the casing. The difference of £600 is way more than the casing cost, hence the fact they do re-use parts to make saving.
Nothing wrong with that but it's not all new I can assure you.
There's various reasons for it to be cheaper. Including:
1. The stigma attached to the term 'Reconditioned' (face it- if it was the same cost as a new box, or probably more due to the extra testing, which version do you think the Dealer would go for?)
2. The fact that Fiat have put a HUGE and unnecessary mark-up on new 'boxes. When I first started in 1999, a recon box was £300 and a completely new unit only £100-200 more. Now a gearbox is priced around £1200 (for essentially the same as what came out of a mk2 Punto 10 years ago)! This is Fiat's way of getting the Dealer to go for stripping and replacing synchro's/gears under warranty, rather than the old practice of fitting a recon box and leaving Fiat to rebuild the old unit.
Has the cost of manufacturing the gearsets and bearings really quadrupled in price?
