Hello!
I was in a rush and accidentally put £15 diesel in my empty fiat 500 hybrid.
Yes I know.
£250 later it got removed and replaced with petrol.
The petrol was down to one bar when I was on the motorway and then started lagging and shutting down as I was driving and bunch of lights came on!
It does still start up and sounds like it was running fine but every light is on!
Wondering if I’ve burned out the sparks?
Or do you think I just need to refuel to the brim with a couple of Jerry’s?
Any other ideas?
Such an expensive mistake to make but I haven’t been driving long so please go easy on me! 💕 any help appreciated!

Hello,

First of all how did you managed to put the diesel hose into the petrol tank? normally the petrol hose is much smaller, so the diesel one wouldn't fit :( Are you sure we'te talking about the correct 'direction' of the mistake? (Yes, I've read it a hybrid, but it seems very strange to me).

Was the engine started with the wrong fuel in the tank?

If so, the spark plugs should not be the biggest problem, but the injectors and the catalytic converter, as theorethically they could be damaged. It depends of how long the engine was running.

Errors should be cleared with the appropiate interface following their checkup. In general by a mechanic, it could spare you some money in any case of problems.

Hi and welcome🙂

Sorry you are here because you have experienced problems.. 😔

Ok,
So you "somehow" got diesel in the petrol tank..
Did you drive far before realising your error?

TRADITIONALLY.. petrol in a Diesel engine would be the bigger issue,

Your Hybrid is a relatively modern engine (been in cars around 10 years..)

The 40 year old FIRE motors like in my 2018 model 500 were not too fussy

You may need 5 posts on here.. But please TRY and post a photo of the Dashboard lights

So we get an idea of what COULD be flagging these errors

I didn’t know they are different sizes, it’s weirdly not as common knowledge as people think! I’ve not been driving long and no one’s ever passed that information down to me. I drove it for two miles until it clunked out. The tank was empty but it’s been professionally cleaned and replaced with petrol. The mechanic said to be prepared for the spark plugs to have some damage as the diesel would burn them out or something ? But it wouldn’t be an immediate issue. My car was driving fine for two days after that.

No, I filled my tank with £15 of diesel, I was at an outback petrol station and their diesel pump was on the right, I was in a rush and the petrol at my usual station is on the right so I didn’t put much thought into it or why the hose was wider. I drove about two miles. I’ve also driven it fine for a few days, the problem came with the petrol light going on, my dashboard lit up like the Blackpool illuminations! Thank you for the help x

No problem,

Worth posting a picture if you can🙂

Traditionally, if the car restarts ok for 3 x trips it will then lose the warnings.. BUT obviously you want to ensure you are not doing damage 😉

Hi to help a petrol nozzle is much smaller so in theory you cannot put a diesel one into a petrol filler( but you can easily the other way round ), also as you're new here's a useful pic of how to hang the filler plug
