General I bought one!

I got the reg number of the car upon paying the deposit so I do believe they have it!

OK maybe I am being too cynical. But why can they not put some trade plates on the car and drive it from the compound to the dealer? How far are we talking?

When giving me the sales "spiel" the compound was "just up the road" - hence my confusion as to why it's now such a logistical nightmare for them, when before the proximity to the compound was a bonus / selling point!!

I can't understand why they can't do this either tbh..

Ah, just up the road! One of those lovely "how long is a piece of string" measurements which could mean 200m down the road OR 50 miles away.

By my calcluations that would save the princely sum of ... £1.73.

(£30 / 52 x 3)

Wouldn't it be £2.50 (£30/12 [months]) since you don't pay for the tax weekly :)

I can always find something else to spend money on and prefer to pick up a car on the 1st or very early in a month rather than the last week or day of the previous month (y)

No:

You said you're off on hols- ask for it once you're back that way you get the car taxed from the start of september rather than paying for 1 week of use in August :D

With a new car you can tax it for a year and a week if you ask the dealer.

Test it like this: ask them the reg number. They should be able to give you it no problem - then you could plug it into confused.com and check what the car is.

* I think.

Dealers are allocated blocks of reg numbers which they assign to individual cars at the point of registration - so they could just allocate you one of those numbers without actually having a car at all.

As you've said, there's little point in deferring registration for tax reasons on a £30pa car - but I'd certainly wait now until 1st September before registering it, as it'll be worth a couple of hundred pounds more on trade-in with the later reg prefix.

Provided you agree not to drive the car until 1st September, the dealer can give it a '61 plate & deliver it to you now on trade plates,

Indeed. The car is used and in the posession of the dealers.

The reason I'm being given is that they're having a problem securing a transporter to bring the car to the dealership from their compound.

The compact version of the story of purchase is - I test drove a 500. On returning from the test drive was told, whilst I was out, customer had phoned up and put deposit down on that very car and it was now sold. However dealer checked stock and said they had an identical car with another few hundred miles on the clock in compound and subject to me giving it the once over prior to purchase, did I want it? I said yes of course (as it was a very good deal) and as it was identical and had less than a thousand miles on the clock, there couldn't be anything wrong with it.

My planned collection date of Wednesday came and went - was told up till that point it was a paperwork problem. But as of Thursday (last time I spoke to them) was now a logistics problem.

It's a bit of a joke to be honest. And I'm remaining very polite and courteous on the phone whenever I speak to the (very apologetic) dealer.. but I don't understand how they can be having these problems frankly and would just like my car now.

Oh dear...sorry to hear about the problems. It was all so easy on here - get some advice from seasoned 500 users, go take a test drive and pay your deposit!:D

Hopefully though all will work out in the end. I do agree to a certain extent with Maxi in that it will all hopefully iron itself out.

But why certain dealers can't just be upfront is beyond me rather than cobbling together "stories" as to why it hasn't turned up. Billy Bull**** is nobody's friend, so stop wheeling him out!(y)

Popped past the dealer last night on my way to the supermarket. The salesman I dealt with wasn't in and the lone salesman said he knew nothing, and that he'd get my salesman to call me today. Which he hasn't done yet.

Slowly starting to lose patience now.

If you going away next week I would suggest putting 'it' to one side. If you think of those who order a new car it takes 10-12 weeks. Looking for a 2nd hand one can take at least a month. There's that guy over in the US having to wait for at least a year for his A500. IMHO another week or two shouldn't matter.

I'd be seriously concerned about this deal now. Perhaps the car doesn't exist, perhaps it's in a bodyshop being repaired, perhaps it's subject to legal wrangling over unpaid finance, who knows??

Whatever the dealer tells you now, how can they reasonably expect you to believe it???

At this point, I'd be round the showroom today to collect any deposit I'd paid, and then I'd walk away. This sort of behaviour by dealers simply makes me :mad::mad:.

The way you've been treated & misled, they absolutely don't deserve your business. Go take it someplace else.

Which dealer is it?

I'm not sure on naming and shaming rules on this forum so I best say nothing yet! It's not a Fiat dealer though if that helps! :)

I have to say - I can't help but think there is some kind of damage and they're trying to get it rectified. Either way it's concerning me a bit.

The most hurtful thing is this is the closest I've ever gotten to buying a new car for myself and the experience thus far has been a pain in the backside. I wanted it to be an enjoyable experience and it really hasn't.

I've been a model customer - I turned up, had a short test drive, and stuck down a deposit on a car I haven't even SEEN yet and been nothing but polite and courteous over this whole process whenever the salesman has called. There has been no finance to sort, and no complications.. these people sell cars for a living, so I don't understand why they're having issues.
