Hi,
I've been renovating a Hymer B694, 1994 (M) for about a year and now I'm getting to some of the engine jobs. I've read some stuff on here and also on Classic Hymers, but would love a proper manual for this engine. Mine has the Iveco gearbox (at least Iveco is stamped on the gearbox). I recently drained the gearbox oil with a view to replacing it. About 2.25L came out. I started filling it at the 'reverse light' junction but didn't remove the filler level plug (if that is what it is at the front of the gearbox), so even after 4L of oil, it still wasn't full at the 'reverse light' junction. I've since added another litre and found out that I should have removed the filler level plug (which looks to me level with the bottom of the casing of the 'add on fifth gear'). My options now are to remove the filler level plug and drain it until it stops but my question is;
Is the excess oil in there at the moment doing any damage, or likely to do damage in the future?
Has anyone got an original specifications sheet from Fiat showing what the level should be?
Thanks,
Al

when mine was refilled an extra .25ltr was recommended for the splash lubrication for the add-on fifth gear making a total of 2.5ltr the reason you have a IVECO gearbox im guessing is if you have the 2.5tdi engine it will be the IVECO engine which was used on fiat base motorhomes from 94 to 98 only. and overfilling can cause clutch slippage, so i would drain and refill to the correct level

Thanks for that johntee...the problem I'm finding is, what is the correct level? Like I said, I measured what came out and it was probably about 2.5L. So go back to that level is what you're suggesting?

What engine is it. I think the 2.5n/a and 1.9 engines had a small casing. 4l is definitely too much 2.75 was the most ever recommended for the 230 series and that was for the mlgu box.

Hi,
The plate at the front says 'MOTORE VERSIONE' 8140.47.

A friend saw it today and said the engine was the same as his (FIAT DUCATO 2.5TD) but the gearbox plate has 'IVECO' written on it. Does that help identify it? The VIN is ZFA23000005014884. Thanks, Al.

go to FIAT DUCATO in WIKIPEDIA and it will confirm the information i quoted you. for your friends engine to be the same he must have the 2.5tdi. not 2.5td the td was a different engine the direct injection 2.5td was the PSA THX 2.446CC engine if your van has air con then you will have the iveco 8140.47R hope this helps. re gearbox oil the MAX i would put in would be 2.75ltrs. the reason the extra volume is advised is because the fifth gear was an add-on as stated and the fifth gear is located at end of shaft with no normal lubrication so realize on a splash back system to lubricate the fifth gear hope this gives a degree of clarification.

Sorry I missed that you had written 8140.47 in the title.

I think yours has the MG5/T gearbox which like the MLGU is 2.75l fill.

Thanks Corcai,

Ok, so my gearbox oil saga continues......(this has been running longer than Corrie......I know). . I still can't find what has been termed, a fill- level plug. The only thing I've found successfully to date is the drain plug. I've shot another video. If someone knows where on this video the plug I need is, could they reference it by time (eg. at 2' 21'') otherwise the only alternative is to drain it all back out and just add 2.5L . Thanks for your patience.

That's certainly an inventive way of seeking help and I was willing you to swing the camera round to the front (i.e. the bit facing the engine) of the gearbox.

This is a link to a similar query and in 2014 that van wasn't such a distant memory as it is now so hopefully I was correct (my claim to fame is that I have checked/changed gearbox oil in all the variants and you really can't beat the version with a dipstick!)
