I just thought I'd share my findings with you...

I spent the last two days driving round wales with a couple of mates, one in a clio 182, and the other in a 182 trophy. I was very impressed with the GP, and my two mates were very suprised. It kept up without a problem, and they both said they had to work their cars really hard to keep up, where as the GP drove easily with all it's torque.

Round the corners was very impressive as well, it went round quicker than the clio 182, but was a little slower than the trophy as that has loads of grip and is really well set up.

Overall the GP stood it's own very well and could take on both the 182's without to many problems!!!

182's are noisy when it comes to the motorway :D

would rather be in a GP.

But on those country roads, i would choose the 182 (y), as you can thrash it.

Saying that i own a diesel

I have owned both a Clio 182 and now a GPS 130 and believe me the 182 with or without Cup suspension would absolutely annihilate the GPS, in a straight line and around the twisties...what planet were these Clio drivers from?

TBH the GPS I own handles like a barge compared to the Clio! Maybe your's is special!

for the straight's mines been remapped so thats why it keeps up. And I've driven a clio 182, trophy and a v6. And yes the clio feels like your going round corners quicker as it's more of a 'go-kart' feeling, but the GP handles well round corners without realising your going as quick as the clios. My mate with the trophy is a very good driver and has done lots of track days and he was very very suprised, so was I as I was expecting to be left for dust.

I have to admit I'm with Shropshire lad. The only way a GPS should be able to keep up with a 182 through the twisties is with a racing driver in the GP and a drunk in the Clio. Even in a straight line I find it hard to belive even a mapped GP can keep with a 182.

I found it hard to believe too, but this was a two day road trip on the great welsh roads, so it wasn't just a one off lucky go for the GP. We've all done between 10-15 trackdays so have had plenty of practice at pushing cars. Have people actually pushed their GP's as there is a lot more grip than I thought. Again, this was in the wet, so who knows what it would be like in the dry.

I reckon the GPS get's a bit of a hard time for it's handling too....I think it's pretty good.

This vid is quite amusing (if it's genuine!?). An obviously remapped GPS giving a new Clio 197 a bit of a shock....

My GPS understeers big time when pushed around the bends and I have got out of shape a couple of times at speeds the Clio would have pootled around.

Alex....Are you running standard springs? Also, what's the engine running at now?

It's on standard springs, all thats different is the front tyres which are falkens, I actually think these grip more than the bridgestones, highly recommended tires for the price.

An enegine that was remapped at the same time as mine is running 157.5BHP and 365nm of torque, compared to the clio 182's 180BHP and 200nm of torque.

Which in gear puts the GP as similar due to the huge torque, up hills and higher speeds it leaves the clio.

Totally agree.

I'm sorry alex but there is no chance even a lowered GP would keep up with a standard 182 round the bends.

I am not by any means calling you a liar, but put a the same driver in both cars and watch the 182 win, everytime.

GPs do not handle well at all, and the 182 should spank it. Your mate could not have been giving full beans.

I would tend to agree with whats been said. But I would say the 182 driver was a better driver than myself and had more balls on the road pushing it very hard. But still the GP if driven right handles great. I don't quite understand what everyones issue with it is. It's a more grown up car and is not as much of a drivers car. It does handle very well and easily gave both 182's a run for there money. When you consider what the GP comes with it really puts the clio to shame for the price difference.

At the end of the day it does come down to drivers, and how each car is driven. I imagine people are trying to drive the GP the same as you'd drive a clio, and that just isn't going to happen. The GP if driven correctly is great.

So he is a better driver than you, in a more capable car than you, yet you kept up?

Wise words written for a change....nice one!

The title says it's only my findings. If someone else would like to give it a go and come back with their findings then feel free to. I think you may well be suprised. You can all sit and go yeah the clios faster, and I agree, it FEELS like it because of it's characteristics, but at the end of the day is it actually quicker?

Doesnt matter, the GPS 1.9 is a smashin motor in its own right. I think Clios are a bit odd with that wierd rear seatbelt thing hangin from the boot roof, do they still have that on later models? Never ever considered a Clio, twoz my daughter wanted one... the cars themselves soon put her off lol!!

And you shouldnt be "pushin it" or "racin it" on the Public Highway! :D

I don't know what to make of this, (Not saying I race on the road) but I've left a fair few cars for dead that I expected to be beaten by, I've never had a go with a clio sport 182 etc so cannot comment, but I did have a bit of fun with a megane 225... yeah never doing that again, it was embarrasing, kept up at the begining :), then the 225 driver must have remembered what the accelerator did... I got owned to say the least. Having a few mates in the car didn't make me feel any better.

In all the modded GP is suprisingly quick, but handling is about average, nothing special. You'd be suprised about what you can beat in it, but as said in posts earlier It's all down to the driver and what gear they're in when you take them on.

I agree in a straight line it's surprising how the GP fairs up to different cars.

But it is does not handle particularly well, it relies on the tyres too much (why do you think bridgestone potenzas are standard?) and especially with a heavy derv lump in the front it is quite nose heavy.

Some people can't drive, there are a few nice bends near to where I live and I can safely say in my old mk2 I have spanked faster cars on the bends which was down to knowing the roads and handling them well.

Like I've said, put a good driver in both cars and the 182 will come out on top.
