With insparation from Maxi's post I need some more help...

Kids (not kids anymore) are doing their own thing now, I have dropped plans for Spain and was thinking Jasper/Banff which is a bit last minute :( and may happen next year now.

We have 7 days on hand options are; Austrian Tirol via Gatwick for a bit of hiking or jump in the 500 and head into Europe as far as Switzerland or Italy with a few days of hiking.

If car, what route from Surbiton via Calais with at least one stop overnight in France before hitting mountains the next day. What do you think ?

oh here is a pic of last trip to rockies, love the place.

Could you spend 2 days in Torino or an overnighter only ?

First thing I would do is go into an Fiat dealership that sells Abarths. They will have 3 Abarths that can be use as a demo / loan model. Manufacture some problem with the TA and do what PJ did and get the salesman to throw you the keys.:)

Now - this is where the planning works wonder...

Head for the Dover to Calais crossing and ring him when you're in France that you wish to extend your test drive but you want to make sure that you've got the 'right' car but you'll be back in a week.;)

Next stop is Switzerland and get the hiking part of the hoilday over and done with so that the OH is truely knackered from walking up mountains.

If you can't get accomodation in the Hotels there's always the Scout hostel (relatively high standard) - at least it will be better than a tent.

Look for the scenic 'drives' and then 'drop down' into Italy where there should be plenty of resonably priced hotels.

#16. Grimsel Pass - Switzerland
#7. Nufenen Pass – Switzerland
#5. Oberalp Pass – Switzerland
#3. San Bernardino Pass – Switzerland
#1. Stelvio Pass - Italy

Turin - my view got a little 'tainted' after seeing the video of the old factory that's now a car park. Happy holidays. (y)

I got back from my 1200 mile summer road trip a couple of weeks ago and never crossed the channel.

Could see the channel, but thats as far as we got.

Glasgow, Lancaster (overnight stop) Sussex for 6 days, Chertsey (Brooklands and Mercedes Benz World), Teversal (near Nottingham, ODI) then home.

Cheers

I love the way you think (y) here is a tentative route with first leg based on Maxis, see what you think, not sure if 7 days does it justice.

A great trip and you did not have to go into France or get Euros !! how lucky is that

We are just down the A3 from Brooklands. I was thinking about a trip back to Ullapool via Glasgow.

Cheers. nice clean cartel website btw, any more stock !!

Thanks, any more stock of what? you can't need another armrest!
We have loads of new things coming soon... PIPERCROSS Filters, REMUS exhausts and V-MAXX suspension to name a few.

Thanks for all the suggestions (y) our route is now mapped for the European trip, ferries & hotels booked except for Boppard.

We are avoiding Switzerland and circling around covering France, Italy, Austria, Germany. Will be going to Austria via Stelvio’s pass, also passing by Nurburing on the way back.

Hope TwinAir makes it, seems a bit underpowered !!

I don't know how much it is now to travel inside Switzerland using the motorways, it was £40 the first two times I went and the last time I took a chance as I was just passing through.

Seems a little shortsighted that they can't offer a one week or two week vignette for say, a tenner instead of having to purchase one for a whole year.

There was criticism of the motorways in Switzerland being empty and the 'back roads' being crowded because of the cost and only the 'well off' could afford to go on them. If the 'locals' can now get a special 'annual' price it sounds like a tourist tax to me.
Once when I was going from Seville to Puerto Banus in a hired Peugeot diesel something (possibly a 206) the hire company said that it was a pretty quick car for 'it's size' and it would be OK on the motorway (again another pricey tolled motorway). What they didn't tell me was that nearly all the cars on the tolled motorway were 2.3L Saabs. 530D, Merc S class, etc were travelling close to the licence losing figure and there wasn't a cop or speed camera in sight. I didn't tell him what the 206 was capable of.
It will be interesting to hear about your TA experience on your return.:)

A silly tax indeed by an easy going country and just to punish you further I read the following; “The validity is printed on the motorway vignette, starting on December 1st of the year before and ending on January 31st of the next year”, wow !! not that they can’t print a 12 month expiry from the day you request it. It’s similar in the UK, paying for road-tax from 1st of the month regardless of what date you apply for tax.

Current price for Swiss sour vinegar is £28.50 http://rail.stc.co.uk/userdata_vignette.php?passid=5&frame=1&system=GB&affiliateid=45

I just realised I may need a Vignette for Austria.

The TA’s power curve is a funny one; you may recall a post by the OH of a lady who said there was kickback on the TA in first gear, well that is what happened yesterday, pulling off fast in first gear loss of power on rev limiter, I know, I know it’s a silly thing to do but sometimes I think I am on the “motorbike” and expect more from it, regardless the 500 is a nice toy car to take on holiday even if my brother laughed and insulted it. I did ask him if I could take his Carrera S, he said he would think about it. I mean what could you possibly do wrong in a Carrera on Stelvio's pass

Not that I have ever done licence loosing speeds (on the famously tarmacked empty and inviting French motorways) but lets say if one does, I was told its better to take an espresso rest to allow the computer at payment junction to average your speed to 120km or below.

Looks a good route. You may well see me there depending on whether I get one of the jobs I've got an interview for later this week. If I get a job there'll be no holiday and since the wife is a school teacher and had 5 and a bit more weeks of holiday I'd rather stay not working! But beggars can't be chosers :p

Don't forget to turn the air to recirculate just before you go through the mont blanc tunnel if you drive through it..
It is very long and the fumes are not nice.

I don't remember the fumes being terrible tbh but we did have the air con on all the way through as it was rather warm!

It was smelly for us...or maybe it was the meal that we had the night before

Might have a lot to do with what is travelling through the tunnel with you or before you. Recirc is a good idea though just in case.
