Technical Help. Engine died.

Technical Help. Engine died.

I changed the battery on the key fob and the car immoblizer went off 10 times in a row. Just like it should do.

And then it stopped working again. Oh well. Need that new key.

The remote works off a little circuit board that sends a radio signal to the car telling it to unlock the doors

The ignition has a small glass chip inbedded in the key which when the coil around the ignition is energised the chip becomes energised and sends a signal out that the car can then read, the chip and the circuit board are completely separate so just because one works doesn’t mean the other one will.

My instinct tells me there is likely a wiring fault or damage somewhere, you could spend days chasing it. If I were you I would get shot of the car while it is running, and get something else. The grandes are getting rusty now, and electrical faults tend to lead to more electrical faults.

I'm aware that this fault could be the end of the car for me, or entirely. But I'm not willing to give up on it just yet. These GPs are a lot of trouble for sure. An intermittent key problem appears to be fairly common, so a new key may fix it permanently.

I bought a battery health tester today and the battery that was originally on the car is dead. What threw me was that I got the battery off the car and put it on my charger, the charger reported it didn't need charging and was at full capacity!!! I'm no longer surprised that the immobiliser was on while i was trying to start the car with a dead battery.

The battery i replaced it with is healthy, and its with this battery that the immobiser was on and off unpredictably last night. I will get that battery on the car again tomorrow. Its quite possible that the car was being temperamental with all of the battery changes and different starting patterns and thought someone was trying to steal it. So i need to start the car (hopefully), leave it running, stop it, start it again, leave it running, for maybe half an hour. Who knows it may behave itself.

Stoopid car :)

The healthy battery went on, i checked connections and earths, but the erratic imobiliser behaviour persists.

It appears the original battery dying is unrelated to the imobiliser problem, it was just a coincidence.

The MultiECUscan package came. It wasn't easy to set up. I managed to find many of the car modules, but when I tried to connect to them i was told i needed to be a registered user. Later on I couldn't even get that far, and was told to check cables lol.

All i can say is bruh :)

Can you not just override the immobiliser with MES? If it’s possible then surely it’d be the easiest option to make the car usable again. Obviously insurance would most probably be void regards theft but if it’s worth next to nothing does it really matter?

Hi,
No that's not possible.
Cheers J

Britain has a tiny minority of problem people from many different ethnic backgrounds including "white british"

The vast majority of people from all ethnic backgrounds are decent , kind , helpful , honest

If someone steals this car I'm really not going to miss it. It might even be my lucky day lol.

As far as I can tell you have to fit a new box of electronics to the car to bypass the electronics in the immobiliser.

This sounds a bit like fixing a filling by having the tooth out. Or putting an expensive new battery in an old worthless mobile phone :)

No doubt right, the trouble makers have been jailed. ;)

The only trouble maker I have in my life is that car lol

See post #24.
Unfortunatly for that to work the story has to be believable, no one is going to believe that anyone stole an old Punto grande.

Some are even now calling it Britistan.
Only certain parts of society usually pushing extreme right wing views, the vast majority of people definitely don’t see any such problems

Part of me thinks this may be an issue with either the engine ECU or the body computer, will be interesting to see if there are any faults recorded when you get set up on MES properly.

It mirrors the agenda in the states in some ways. Many pensioners over here as in Great Britain will freeze to death this winter simply because they are old and white. The difference being the money spent on social programs here vs. the seniors over there losing their heating allowance to keep all the illegal migrants in hotels with central heat, catered food and free BBC television.

Today, the immobilser was working, but the remote door locking wasn't working...

I've got a guy coming to make a new key tomorrow, hopefully that will fix the problem.

I've not tried MultiECUscan again, i was under the impression I only needed the cables to get error codes and I only needed to pay for a registered copy if i wanted to do anything fancy, like resetting. So if the key is the problem I'll possibly send the cables back. If not i'll pay for a registered copy of MES and then get the codes.

I got a new key, and the new key just worked 30 times in a row!

Happy Days :D

The car battery dying threw me quite a curve ball. Two relatively simple things going wrong at the same time makes the problem look terrible!

Not driven it anywhere yet, bit nervous about that...:)

Thanks for the help in this thread fellas!

It's lucky for you the old key was working enough for them to be able to clone the code off it, otherwise you'd be really stuffed, or did they plug into the car and program you a brand new key without needing the old one ?

He did use the car port to get the Fiat code off the car itself. He made a specific point of telling me about the advantage of doing this and reprogramming the key from the car itself. He said Timpsons would clone the key given to them, including any errors. It took him about 15 minutes and he charged £80 for a non-remote key. I suppose with driving time its about £80/hour, reasonable enough. This is also £10 cheaper than Timpsons, which would include my driving time.

This is my "project car" that I recovered from scrap, so the car owes me atleast another 20,000 miles i say lol. Anyway there are some less stressful jobs I have to do on my EVO now...never a moments peace with these Puntos lol.
