What sort of idiot doesn't have a 12 mm hex key (shuffles through toolbox and doesn't find a 12 mm hex key, thinks to himself what the hell is a hex key anyway, must be one of those ones that normal people don't, shhh don't let them know I'm an idiot too) I mean I have at least 7 spinners and some other stuff in my toolbox (cough ahem)

ha ha i have wishbones to replace on panda and only just realised i dont own a 18mm socket so one ordered, 12mm hex key ? hmmm oil change soon i better have a rummage before i get the oil.....

punto gearboxes are made to a very slim margin
ive had them rebuilt since at least 10 years ago
once they sound noisy in intermediary gears they go to china, i wont have them reconned by cowboys swapping bits about
ive taken them apart i even put a utube link up on here for peoples perusal
how can you say a noisy gearbox is ok
are you really with all the young uns i see who really dont understand that things wear out

my punto had 130k on clock, i did 14k on it and first gear sounded like reverse realy noisey but never jumped out of gear or missed a beat
we used to recon gearbox by replacing the 4 shaft bearings and syncro rings
cost about £30 in parts and charged £170 to do fitted provided all the rest was ok
anything else that was worn was replaced from used stock

18mm that's like a big one, mine have odd numbers on them with a slash in between and don't fit on anything, damn grandad ordered the foreign ones :D

Hi all,

Sorry, life got in the way of further investigations for a while. However, these have now proved that the gearbox is not in the greatest of health.

Finally got the battery box off, and removed and examined the lever on top of the box. It seemed a bit loose, although no obvious signs of wear. On replacement, it did seem to tighten up quite well, with almost no movement when checking again afterwards.

In the meantime, as it was now making a noise as if something was rotating at wheel speed and clobbering something else, I did some more grovelling in the dark. There was nothing hanging off any external parts which could cause the problem, so back to the gearbox.

Initial check of the oil level was fine, no evidence of leaks, no topping-up required. Took the cover off the end of the 'box (getting at that was fun!), and drained the oil. Inspected the contents of the container with a magnet - hello swarf... This included a tooth from somewhere in there -not a good sign, methinks.

When I took the cover off there was a lovely shiny bit on the inside - something was definitely out of alignment.

I put it all back together, refilled the oil, and left it alone.

After much discussion, we decided that even with reconditioned 'box we would be worried about what would happen next. That plus the cost, has led us to replace it. The local scrappy offered the princely sum of £80 to take it away - as you can imagine, we weren't too impressed.

We managed to get a reasonable sum in part-exchange on the new car, and the Punto is being taken away by the dealer tomorrow. We shall be sad to see it go, as it has served us well over the years, but it seems the best decision.

I would just like to say thank you very much for all of the help and advice I have received. This is a lively, interesting, and helpful community of knowledgeable enthusiasts.

Bye for now.

Regards,

Dave

I had a tipo years ago when some weird looking part on the linkage seized, (looked like a flipper from pinball machine)it would jump out of gear. However i'm with s and b if its making noises combined with your garage saying new gearbox I think you've got your answer. (n)

O never read the last post.
