Hi all,
Sorry, life got in the way of further investigations for a while. However, these have now proved that the gearbox is not in the greatest of health.
Finally got the battery box off, and removed and examined the lever on top of the box. It seemed a bit loose, although no obvious signs of wear. On replacement, it did seem to tighten up quite well, with almost no movement when checking again afterwards.
In the meantime, as it was now making a noise as if something was rotating at wheel speed and clobbering something else, I did some more grovelling in the dark. There was nothing hanging off any external parts which could cause the problem, so back to the gearbox.
Initial check of the oil level was fine, no evidence of leaks, no topping-up required. Took the cover off the end of the 'box (getting at that was fun!), and drained the oil. Inspected the contents of the container with a magnet - hello swarf... This included a tooth from somewhere in there -not a good sign, methinks.
When I took the cover off there was a lovely shiny bit on the inside - something was definitely out of alignment.
I put it all back together, refilled the oil, and left it alone.
After much discussion, we decided that even with reconditioned 'box we would be worried about what would happen next. That plus the cost, has led us to replace it. The local scrappy offered the princely sum of £80 to take it away - as you can imagine, we weren't too impressed.
We managed to get a reasonable sum in part-exchange on the new car, and the Punto is being taken away by the dealer tomorrow. We shall be sad to see it go, as it has served us well over the years, but it seems the best decision.
I would just like to say thank you very much for all of the help and advice I have received. This is a lively, interesting, and helpful community of knowledgeable enthusiasts.
Bye for now.
Regards,
Dave
