My Fiat 500 is an automatic transmission car. It happens regularly that I am driving on the highway in fifth gear that the car suddenly gives an emergency signal (high pitched beep) and that the gear goes into neutral (N). The only solution is then to set the gear position to Manual, and manually switch back to the correct gear. This happens especially when I want to overtake and the car has to switch back to fourth gear.

On the highway this can cause life-threatening situations. Who has experience with this and more importantly: how can this be solved?

Dualogic issues on older higher mileage cars are unfortunately quite common.

After 14 years and 196000 km, your transmission is likely just plain worn out. Objectively, it's done better than most to get this far.

Fixing it properly is quite likely to cost substantially more than the value of the car. If it still works intermittently, this could be a good time to sell it.

At this point, I'd be thinking about buying something else.
