My daughter's been a little forceful going into reverse with the gear lever and seems to have managed to break something so that the collar no longer seems to have anything that keeps it in place (in the 'down' position). Presumably there should be a spring somewhere - either up near the gearknob pushing the collar down, or down near the bottom of the lever pulling the plastic shaft down. Gear selection is fine so I'm happy it's nothing more serious than this but I'd like to fix it so she doesn't mistakenly go from 5th to reverse on the motorway . What's the part I need to source?

Hi mate,

The spring is at the top under the gear knob. It sits over the shaft on a retainer at the top of the lift up collar.

The best place to get it from is a scrap yard. Id advise to take it apart first and see if it is the spring thats failed or the retainer, as it may be better/easier to take a whole gear stick unit from a scrap car or ebay depending on whats failed.

Hope that makes sense/helps

Alan
