Hey everyone

I’ve heard some mentions of onboard charger OBC problems on the Fiat 500e and wanted to ask if this is a widespread issue or if it affects only certain model years. Has anyone here experienced it?

Also, are there any known ways to prevent or mitigate the problem? And does Fiat offer any extended warranty or service options to protect against it?

Would really appreciate any insights or experiences you can share!

Thanks!

This is not an isolated case; similar problems with the Onboard Charger OBC is found across other Stellantis brands like Citroën, Opel, Peugeot, and Jeep, indicating a possible design or manufacturing flaw in the onboard charger. In the video above, it is mentioned that this is a problem that occurs frequently.

To repair the car with a new or used onboard charger, a specific code from Fiat (Stellantis) is required, which is not provided for used components. The repair of the Stellantis onboard charger costs between DKK 75,000 and DKK 175,000 (10,000 to 23,000 euros), and if the battery is damaged, costs increase by an additional 13,300 euros.

"STELLANTIS also imposes exorbitant parts costs. The Continental electric motor used across their models costs €14,000 and can’t be purchased separately from the inverter. The OBC is priced at €3,800 in the catalog. There is no straightforward protocol to reprogram a used inverter, making repair unsustainable and generating unnecessary waste. Replacing an inverter or motor requires disassembling the entire front end. The system is so poorly designed that the process is excessively complex—unlike BMW, Audi, and Tesla, which offer much simpler access.... We’ve documented three cases of catastrophically flawed MAHLE OBC and DCDC units integrated into a single module, with eight circuit boards that overcomplicate the system to an extreme. "
