Of course, personally I'm with you on not using roof racks either. Whenever we buy something large we usually get it delivered and if we had a family we'd just have a bigger car

I still feel that these bars being TUV approved and being used in a sensible manner, would be fine though

If you look at the fastener points referred to in the Fiat Handbook on p51 there are quite different to the anchor points for the La PreAlpina roof rack.

I suspect Multispoke's very useful and likeable post answers my earlier question about why they sell it in the USA not not here (for glass roofs).
It also suggests that the Halfords reason (flex in the body causing the roof to move) looks quite possible.
I sure won't be using a roof rack on my Lounge. My wife can just carry on getting the bus like she does now.

Depends on whether the wife is aerodynamically shaped as to whether you'd want to carry her on the roof, don't want to ruin your MPG figures.

A very fair point as I'm sure that Daniel will concede. Perhaps we should also have an "agree with" button, lol.
Personally I think that talking about a product - made by an ISO acredited company which is TUV approved - falling off and talking about insurance liability is needlessly scaremongering. No apology will be forthcoming, sorry.
If you'd come on here and said something like "One thing to mention, as in thread x, the glass roof is expensive to replace so you're best off making sure that this product is made to work with the glass roof properly" then I would have agreed with the post and probably would have liked the post. I think there's a right way to do things and a wrong way and your first posts in this thread were very much wrong. Jrkitching and Robinpj have showed that you can be cautious and informative without being needlessly alarmist.

And I feel that you need to re-read the earlier posts in this thread before I made that comment and put yourself in the shoes of someone who was considering buying yourself this product to go on a 500 Lounge.
As I've pointed out many times, TUV approval is extremely hard to get and if something is TUV approved then you can be 99.99% sure that it will operate safely barring some sort of material failure..... If the roof rack came off and was used as per the manuals then the TUV would be getting asked why and I doubt they'd put themselves in that position.

I think we should apologise to itimjim for how this thread has degenerated. I've lurked around on the FiatForum for a few months now, and find that many threads degenerate in to a, not quite a slagging match but something close. Being a relative newbie here I did read Multispoke's reply as keen and OTT, we're all guilty of wording things poorly that sometimes then sound 'wrong'.
Now there is a vote up/down option it would good to use this option to let the poster know you're not happy with their comments rather than bite back, if enough down vote then that post would not be there for all to see though you can click on it to be offended or otherwise.

I agree. I would like to apologise to Tim for things getting so out of hand. Don't be scared off, we're not usually this disfunctional.
Also, as a side note about the moderators on here; we don't do this as a paid job. It's not a job, it's just a voluntary thing we've agreed to do to try and make the forum run as well as possible.

Well I've messaged Multispoke a couple of times now to say that it's nothing personal. Hopefully he comes back, he was a helpful chap and I think things may have got a tad out of hand.

Apologies for ruffling the hornet's nest. I've not shied away, just been busy myself.
The roof bars and soft box arrived quite promptly last week, or was it the week before? I've been that busy. All was well, and Mick even sent me a photo via email to show me my package - never seen that one before.
I've not had chance to put them on the 500 yet, as the weather has been crap, and did I mention I've been busy...sorry. I did however have time to assemble them, which was a bit confusing being a mixture of Italian, poor drawings and complete inexperience with roof bars. I got there though, and everything looks good.
I was a bit confused about how they were going to mount, and I've managed to figure out the front bar, as there's a welded bolt hole in the under sill at the top of the door on the Lounge (not sure about Pop), which the fixing arms curl around and mounts upwards. The arms are coated in rubber, to aid grip and damaging paintwork I assume.
The rear I'm not too sure about, as having looked, it's showing insertion into the rubber seal at the top of the rear quarter. Inspecting the rubber, it doesn't look that easy to shift, but I've only spent a minute, so it might be obvious. I live on a road with no parking to front and rear, hence why it's not just a pop out and try them on kind of thing.
Anyway, I think this weekend I will be trying them on, and will let you know how it goes on. If I get chance, I'll take some photos too.

Also, the bars are rated at 90 km/h only, being a measly 56 mph. I don't know if that's a general guideline for after market bars, or just for these. I can't see myself doing much more than 65 mph anyway, with a full roof box, car and 1.2 engine...unless going down a 1 in 5
