Bill Blydenstein, Gerry Marshall and Will Sparrow were heroes of mine, all trying to defeat the motorsport behemoth that was Ford. I remember Blydenstein doing a lot of work on the Vauxhall slant 4s and, apart from Porsche and Mitsubishi later on, they ignored the fact that it was considered at the time that if you wanted to go much bigger than 2 litres you needed 6 cylinders. I'm seem to remember that Vauxhall actually encouraged them to develop that 2.3 and they ended up boring it out to 2.6 litres. They were also entered into the tow car of the year competition and beat a 3 litre Grandad Estate for torque and drivability. A superb motor that, sadly was not developed (by Vauxhall) at least, although it did go on to form the basis for the 900(?) series Lotus engine and also found its way from there into the Jensen Healey and Chrysler Sunbeam Lotus.

Argenta roof? That's funny, I thought they had a vynyl roof.

One thing that spoke volumes about the strength of that engine, was that it was only when they got to about 240 bhp in the race Firenzas and rally Chevettes that they really needed to beef up the bottom end.

It may or may not interest you to know that many years ago I met Bill Blydenstein, I used to have a 2.3 Firenza. I've also been lucky enough to drive an HS and an HPF Firenza.

Back in 2004 I was testing a Formula Renault at Silverstone. Gerry Marshal was having a bit of practice in Nick Mason's 330 GTO for the Goodwood Revivial. The way he came out of Woodcote was a sight to behold from the pit wall. I ended up having a chat with him over lunchtime, he had a go at me for smoking. Little did he realise he was one of my driving heros. He died about 3 months after that. The marshals were saying about him causing havoc following his double hip replacement. One of my other driving heros has to be Barrie 'Whizzo' Williams. He actually took me for my race licence, how lucky was I eh? :p

Anyway retro cars? Well a thread wouldn't be complete without an AE86, so here's mine:
