hey, understand from selenia website that the bravo uses Selenia KPE 5-40 oil, but our workshop say this oil is no long in production and recommend Selenia Star 5-40W engine oil. Any one know the different between the 2, will it cause any problem to the car?

If it required 5w-40 then really doesn't matter if it's called KPE or Star it'll meet the requirements of the engine. I wouldn't go mail ordering oil when an autofactor will sell a decent brand for alot less.

I want to say that is not really true. Because, Star engine oil is for Alfa, not for Fiat. And on official site there is no information about replacement and no information that is this oil out of production.

Maybe I have wrong, but it will be useful to send an e-mail direct to Selenia. [email protected]

Some oils are made to specific manufacturers specification but lets get real about this there is nothing special about any of the engines in the Bravo and I don't think they demand special oil requirements since they not high performance engines. Your best bet is to buy a quality (but expensive) Ester based oil if you're worried otherwise anything that meets the spec outlined in the manual is sufficient. Change your oil every 7000 miles.

Aren't Alfa and Fiat engines, for the most part, identical bar the software. I know there is the Alfa six, but....?

Fords are very oil specific, but not Fiat/Alfa. Get the spec right and buy a decent brand...

Don't forget, abroad these engines, even the newest ones, have to contend with heat, cold, crap roads, dust, neglected servicing and wholesale abuse.

Oh, and here too these days (y)

Seriously though, just stick to the correct spec and obey the service schedule.

hey, the techincian confirm is ok with Selenia Star, since the spec for both is the same,I have tried and sure enough Selenia oil is definitely better than the Catrol oil that the car dealer gives!

Playing devils advocate can you confirm how Selenia is definately better than Castrol oil? Gut feel or lab based testing of these oils?

Out of production? It only came out around when the 500 launched (before that Selenia K was used), so it's unlikely to be no longer supplied. It's been a pain to get though- we were trying for ages before we got some, and now we use that instead of the normal 'K' for all the Fiat petrol engines.

The last 'Alfa' petrol in a Fiat was the 1.8 16v in the Stilo, and now all the Alfa's use the GM stuff :yuck:. However, the MiTo is now using the Fiat 1.4, and there's the rumours of the 'proper' 3.2 GTA lump returning to the bigger vehicles. :D

ACEA codes are different (not that I'm bored enough to want to understand what all those figures mean). Reading the specs on the Selenia site, the stAR Pure Energy is actually the same spec (though I can't say I've heard of it 'til now).
Whether one brand is better than another is difficult to say without lab tests, but I believe it's better to stick with what the manufacturer has used as they base all their reliability/warranty data, emissions, fuel economy, performance, etc figures on the specifications of that oil.

Sorry, I was thinking Diesel. I hardly consider petrol engines these days - not until they come up with the new twins anyway
I hadn't even thought about the Mito and its turbo fours...

You sure about the 3.2 lump? It was put out of production by Alfa because of emmission requirements. Great engine but can't see it being brought back into production. I think the new Mito GTA is suppose to have a 1.8 Turbo and turn out about 230bhp. Most GTAs turn out slightly less than the quoted 250bhp, unfortunately in the credit crunch/green world I can't see Alfa bringing back large capacity engines when they can get the same performance from a smaller lighter engine. Shame because it's a great engine have having gone from 156 GTA to Bravo T-jet they're a different league of car.

Sorry, when I said 'proper', I meant an Alfa designed and built V6 (though I have heard it's a redesigned version of the original to meet current/future regs). Got to be better than the dreary GM-sourced unit.

Yep MiTo is getting a 1.8 turbo (though no-one seems to know if it's all-new or sourced from somewhere else). I remember hearing the 159 GTA, when it arrives, is supposed to use a Maserati V6/V8 lump- but like you say, the current climate doesn't bode well for gorgeous-sounding, but thirsty, engines.

The original Alfa V6 I think has been taken about as far as it can go hence why it was dropped for the GM based V6 which met the Euro standard without huge investment.

Not sure what's going to happen to all these juicy motors in the credit crunch world.....
