Just started back after weekend away and the engine management light has come on and the engine seems slightly sluggish and also seems to be missing slightly.the journey out was fine and the van was never moved during our stay but as soon as I started up the light came on, it is a Ducato Autotrail Cheyenne 2004 2.8 JTD with 50000 on the clock, any suggestions and what sort of cost to have it put on tester,

Cheers

For the price of getting it checked , buy yourself an EOBD reader ! All petrol cars built after 2000 and diesel cars (vehicles) after 2002 had to have a common interface you can buy readers for about £50:00 they tell you in plain English what's wrong !

Try multieuscan free software and a lead from gendan.co.uk (they're pretty helpful).
Not all diesel commercials were obd compliant until much later and my 2.8jtd was not but the meuscan software worked ok. You get lots of extras if you pay for the registered version but not essential to read and clear codes.
Check out info on FF or google it.

Although I agree that modern code readers are decent and easy to use...just remember that you have to 'prove the fault'....just because you get an air flow meter fault (for example) it doesn't mean it is and after spending £220 on a new part that doesn't work...well that's your fault.

If you do get a code reader let us know what the results are and we will try and guide you in the right direction.

Thanks for all the replies but you are getting a bit techy for me when you mention meters and things so will be looking for garage to check it out for me, and perhaps in the future i will look into the meter business and maybe get one to just investigate any issues.

Managed to get vehicle looked at by a local garage and he put it on a meter and it suggested a fault on number 4 cylinder injector, the guy said it may just be a faulty or loose wire and low and behold that is what it was, fixed and had a prelimiary service whilst it was there so i know when the oil and filter was changed, total charge £218.00 inc dreaded vat, am i right in thinking this was a fair price. He also suggested that i have my cam belt changed as i did not know when it was last changed if at all,the vehicle has only done 50,000 mls but is ten years old so will seriously look at having the belt done soon, guess that will be pricey.
Thanks again for the replys

Common problem here - the injector loom is too short. You can buy a longer one, or extend what you have.

When you have this issue, go to number four injector and push the clip on firmer and it will run fine again. Nothing unusual!
