Technical Does my 500 have TC/ESP

I'd just like to say that my 500 has the smallest brakes fitted to any model of 500, it's got the crappy suspension from the pre-2010 cars, it's on winter tyres in what is (or at least was) a heatwave and I sometimes drive it far faster than I should.

I have not come remotely close to crashing. I had one moment where I understeered and was a couple of inches from a wheel off the road, but that's it.

Not going to say that the 500 is uncrashable, but you have to be a bit of a spanner or come across someone else being a spanner to manage it, in which case ESP won't help much anyway. Build an idiot proof car and they'll just build a better idiot (the AhmettS) anyway :)

Journalist to Ettore Bugatti...

'M Bugatti, the brakes on your cars are not always very good'.

Bugatti...

'I build my cars to go, not stop!'

For example esp kept me in the lane i was in instead of countersteering and changing lanes. Esp appled brakes on the front right brake only which is impossible to do without esp. Unless maxi has figured out a way to only brake the front right wheel. Maxi can you share with us how to brake the front right wheel only?

That's like asking me what i'd do (other than shooting him) if Trayvon Martin was beating the crap out of me, the point is that I'm not going to get myself in that position in the first place.

If you drive like a fool then you're going to find yourself in situations where ESP helps make up for your deficit of driving talent/judgement far more often than others.

There are other accidents which nothing can be done about anyway. A really good friend of mine had an accident a few years before I met her, she was driving along minding her own business when a woman came along in the other direction whilst arguing with her kids in the back of her car and wasn't paying attention and crashed into my friends Saab 9-3 Cabriolet, unfortunately she had her hand on the horn at the time and the bag deployed snapping her arm. Nothing she could have done to avoid the accident and although her injuries weren't life threatening, it made a mess out of her arm.

Personally I think the ESP can give people like yourself the false belief that you'll be able to avoid all accidents when that's simply not the case. If the ESP on the 500 was switchable then I would have specced it as it is a good feature, but personally I'd rather be able to find myself a nice safe bit of road where I can play and drive how I want and not how the car thinks I should.

Normally, you can switch ESP by disabling the steering angle sensor, but with EPAS, I don't think that will work. On the other hand, the ESP threshold is set pretty high, even for a track. The only way I've set off ESP is by deliberately swerving suddenly and aggressively.

ASR strangles your fun a bit, but thankfully is fully switchable.

I know I know :) but in a silly way I just like knowing that 100% of what the car does is down to me. I've never owned a car with ESP or even traction control and have had some very fun times where the conditions permit :) Driving the Langford Park shakedown stage in a RWD car is muchos fun ;)

If it was RWD then non switchable ESP would drive me nuts, but on a FWD it doesn't matter, plus ESP can't defeat the HANDBRAKE! :D
