Hi there,
I am experiencing an issue changing down from 3rd to 2nd. I believe it to be the syncro, although it was also suggested that the clutch could be the issue

The symptoms are as follows:
I have no trouble going up the gears or changing down when going extremely slowly (say under 10 mph). Anything above that and I crunch the change down to 2nd.

The van has less than 18k miles on the clock but has had a replacement clutch fitted

My question is how much would I expect to pay to have this work completed, I assuming it means removing the gearbox etc.

Secondly if it is the syncro, would it be a cheaper alternative to get a full re-conditioned gearbox fitted rather than getting my own repaired.

I assume a gearbox specialist is a better bet than going back to Fiat, the van is a 2008 3.0ltr

I don't know the answers but on my 3L I do not need to go down into 2nd above 10mph. I normally go round roundabouts etc in 3rd even at relatively low speeds. The cost of a recon gearbox is quite substantial, can you not work round it?

I have had work done to my gearbox at 160000km by cork Gearbox , and at 310000 Km I had the Clutch changed ,over the last few weeks the gearbox has got extreamly stiff , very hard to get into gear , it went back into Cork Gearbox and they thought the Clutch was not disengaging properly , they have just fitted a dual mass Flywheel , and it seems to have cured it , mileage now 340000 km

Changing a set of synchros is easily done and shouldn't render the box unrepairable,,obviously until he box is stripped you won't know if ther synchros are close to their limit..Though if you say just do 2nd that should be all that is done ,so should be a new bulk ring ,synchro and sleeve..

Old habits die hard! I have a habit of double clutching all the time in my 2001, makes a very smooth change, Even do it in the car! Years ago I drove old trucks and tractors with no syncro so you had no choice, Pretty sure it easier on the box as well, also I noticed a lot of people with campers are too used to car driving and expect the same fast and crisp gear change, slow it down, feel the neutral between gears,it makes it all smoother and easier on the box.

Nicely put Digger58, I drove coaches for years, useful skill to have ;)
Agreed, a gear change is two movements , double clutching will reduce wear on synchros!!

id be checking the cables for wear and see if they can be adjusted i had trouble with the 4th to 5th change had mine adjusted and no more prob but told they were at their limits and would be looking to have them changed next time that was 60000kms ago still going strong cheers Adam

Thanks for all your replies, will check linkage and cable first and also get oil changed in the gearbox to see if there are any metal shards hanging around.
Currently the van is very drivable and you really don't need to change down to 2nd very often as on roundabouts etc , she will easily take off in 3rd.

Thanks
Raymond

Taking off in 3rd will soon do for your clutch! That's why you have 1st and 2nd! I even found 1st a bit high at times for steep starts.
