Hiya,

Does anyone have any knowledge of why the 7th-10th(or 11th) digits of the VIN number for a Fiat 500 contain zeroes, e.g. ZFA3120000 but there is an exception with the Scudo, e.g. ZFA2700006?

If anyone can offer their ideas then that'll be great!

I Have the same problem.
Our 500TA VIN is ZFA31200000745586

I understand that the ZFA is Fiat Italy, but the year identifier should be a letter, not a number.

Any ideas to what each field ACTUALLY means?
Wiki is of no help, and even Googling can't help either.

It seems that no matter where I look, I get info saying regarding some of the fields being ......... Invalid ......... Incorrect etc

One website says it's a Fiat 500, but the engine is not applicable, the region/plant is not applicable and the year of manufacture is supposed to be 2007!

One says it's a passenger vehicle! :bang:

Any ideas for something accurate?

Regards,
Mick.

This is a bit better:
http://www.vindecoder.pl/ZFA31200000745586

But quickly explained:
ZFA = Italy (Fiat)
312000 = Type of vehicle. Fiat uses the internal development code, here 312 for the new 500.
00745586 = Unique number of this car.
Thanks Santa,
That's pretty much what I found ......... and that's the best out there.

Trouble is, I reckon that the info on that page is just an obvious set of info that you could get just by looking at the car externally, irrespective of the VIN. It's an interpretation, not an analysis.

I wanted a breakdown of the VIN and to tell me, for instance, when it was manufactured, not just the model year.

The car was bought Sept 14th 2011, who knows when it came off the production line!??

That number tells a tale, and I wondered if there was a way of unravelling the tale.

Regards,
Mick.

I don't think You can get that information from just the VIN.
The VIN can be used to get the more detailed information from the manufacturer.
As far as I can tell, all the numbers tell You, is the manufacturer (and country), the type of car (in a Fiat it's the development code, 312 for 500, 198 for new Bravo etc.) and then the serial number of the car.
These information can then be compared to the information from Fiat, which then tell You production year/month, colour, equipment etc.

You can get the vehicle's actual build date or 'assignment' date, from your friendly Fiat dealership. Ask them to check for you on the Fiat system, when rolled off the production line. Their records will show that. I've asked for the build date of both of our former 500's from the dealerships and they stumped up the info eventually.

However, they may not be so keen to do this if you're buying pre-reg as I found out with our old TA. I didn't find out until the first service, that the car was actually built a full 14 months before I bought it as a 'brand new' pre-reg. Just goes to show how long some dealerships can keep a car stood on the lot for! I would therefore always recommend to ask for the car's build date if buying pre-reg. After all, it's your money and they want a sale. Don't be fooled into thinking you're buying a car that is a lot newer than it actually is!

I was very pleased to find out that on handover of our new i10 back in July, that it had only been built some seven weeks before we got our grubby little mits on it. :D

You can get some information from ePER, the Fiat parts catalogue.

ZFA31200000745586 was built on 28/7/2011

How?
Have you a link?

If I go to the ePer tab at the top of this page and select Fiat and input our VIN, I get a message that the chassis is not found. The New500 isn't listed anyway.

Thanks,
Mick

EXCELLENT! :D

Thank you very much, Santa!
That is the sort of info required.

I think this link should be publicised on this forum for other people to input their VINs.

Thanks again,
Mick.

Santa, I'd like to add my thanks also. The forum ePER didn't like my VIN either however the one at your link did.

However in looking up my vin although it gives the correct vehicle (grande pun to, 2007, 3dorr diesel - the diagram shown for the part I am after looks wrong. I am after drivers seatbelt, however my belt bolts direct to the body via a triangular clip on the belt end, while the diagram in your ePER shows it attaching to a metal loop. It's almost like my belt is for the 5 door grande

Is there anyway to confirm what the right part number should be?
