Hi

Does anybody know what this part does (the round black thing)? It sits in the middle of the clutch slave cylinder pipe. The pipe is leaking on my car and I wanted to see if I could bypass it rather than replace it. I assume that it is an expansion chamber but not sure how important it is.

Thanks

Definitely not meant to be there. Looks to me like a screw shut valve, rusted at the back.
You are safe to cut the plastic either side of the rusted piece. Replacement is a pipe connector commonly used to replace the "quick release" joint you can see further up.
eBay has a cheapy push fit also for Ford Ka and also a compression fit.
I have just fitted the cheapy which came apart 😞. Suddenly no clutch and first gear limp home.
Bought the compression one due Monday (Yodel 🤬).

Thanks for the response, really helpful and what I was hoping to hear.

Fitted the compression connector. More confident than the push fit. No instructions included but basic.
Pipe inserts don't fit into the 2008 Fiat. Fitted with PTFE and careful asymmetric olives.
Job done.
Some pictures look like a softer clutch pipe. The insert works, as I dry fitted on another same sized pipe. Also the failed plastic connector gripped the softer pipe. The Fiat pipe did not 'bite'.
Hopefully your sorted.

Hi, yes, I used a compression fitting like this one & so far so good. I didn't put any inserts in but all seems OK🤞Thanks again for your help and glad your sorted.
