Off Topic Bye bye 500!

Strange. Im running 3 "bangers" and your costs for 1 are more than im paying.

Strangely enough the same is true for us. We own a notoriously expensive to run Subaru and it doesn't cost us that much to fix it...... Funny that!

Slightly unfair comparison - a cool 500 1.4 verus a workhouse estate (but a lot better that a 323i !)

2 year old Fiat 500 1.4 Paid cash €9,800
Depreciation €1500 (Last '08 Sport lost roughly this on depreciation)
Tax €300
Insurance €350
Fuel €1267 (7K 37mpg €6.70gal)
Servicing €300 (Fiat service €250 + €50 for extra bits)
No NCT required until June 2013
TOTAL €3,717

Marea 1.6 10 year old Paid cash €1,500 in 2005
Depreciation €300 ('written off' over 5 years)
Tax €445
Insurance €540 (Over 8 years - loaded)
Fuel €1675 (7K 28mpg €6.70gal) [done for comparison purposes]
NCT (MOT) €70 (Re-test always needed)
Servicing €150 ('Back street' garage)
Overheating 'Problem' €150
Tyres apportioned cost €100
TOTAL €3430

Running an 'average' old car versus a new 'smaller' car for me has been has been marginally cheaper.
But I'm happy to pay for the reliability & safety of a newer car.

Glad someone understood the point I was making

Probably the one that doesn't have brake fires :p

:Dthe fire was caused by me driving at 70mph with one of the brake servos malfunctioning and keeping the rear brakes fully on (just felt a little sluggish compared to normal:eek:, not bad for a 40 year old engine(y)) they finally caught fire. That servo has now been by passed, and rest of braking system replaced. The 500 will be on its 3rd set of suspension in 10 years or more if next user does more than 6000 a year, a potential £500 plus cost every 2 or 3 years:yuck:

I had a sticky handbrake on my 504. I suspect I got close to brake fire territory :D The wheel was way too hot to touch and I had to wait till had cooled down before I could do anything.

I'm going to replace all the suspension parts with quality non-genuine parts so i think for about a grand (including dampers) I'll have suspension which will more or less last the life of the car.

has some one else started manufacturing better wishbones and top mounts then? (top mounts are a water trap on 500 compared to panda, my were completely rusty:() as water runs down screen and straight onto them, pandas drain away before they get to them:confused:.

Whilst it's a rust trap I don't really see it as being a problem. As for wishbones, yes there are some QH ones available. There is a better variety available for the Panda so I'm sure in a couple of years there'll be an even better variety for the 500. QH is a decent brand and they make ones for the 500.

my neighbour has a panda and the drainage route is different and to our eyes (2 former engineers) the pandas appeared much better as it routes water away from top strut
