Robin - it is a dualogic! Many thanks I'll try that....I generally drive automatics so am likely to leave it in neutral....I'll check tonight on the way home.

Cheers (y)

I can't remember if i am getting you mixed up with someone else, but did you not have a Smart before the 500? Anyway the auto box on the Smart is just the same in as much as you put the lever in R when you park which prevents the car from moving if the handbrake is not strong enough.

It was me who had the Smarts - great memory you have there (y). I occasionally have a bit of a sigh when I see a particularly fancy Smart go past these days, but all in all I'm hooked on the 500 - just that bit more comfortable and I love having 4 seats and space for all my sports kit! :)

And it wouldn't surprise me if your 1.2 500 gives you better real world fuel economy than a petrol Smart. Sounds like a 'Win-Win' to me:).

Good memory? well the Manchester bit did help me.
Glad you like the 500,but i enjoy only having 2 seats.Don't have to give anyone a lift lol. I always had 2 seater sports cars years ago,so i am used to it.
Sports kit? Please..... As long as i have room for my fish & chips i'm happy!!

Yes i am sure you are correct about the petrol Smarts. Some say they only get 30 MPG but most get 40 MPG,however i have the diesel which always gets 60 MPG round town and 70 MPG on a longer motorway run, plus free road tax.
Smarts are about more than just MPG though. There is a large club for them and around 6 forums on the web.Plus many meetings throughout the year in Italy,France, and the big Smart meeting at Mercedes Benz world, called the Smart Festival.
If i ever get a 500 it will be the Abarth, which is closer to the Panda 100 HP i had. Mind you i like the look of the new VW UP which is out next year, plus of course my all time fave car the Mazda MX5.

Oh dear, I thought fish and chips were part of a workout - so that's why I'm more Miss Piggy than Jessica Rabbit!!

Seeing your post, I took a quick look at the UP!

I thought it looked quite like the Toyota IQ, which I took a look at when I was thinking of trading in my Smart. I liked the car to drive, but it had no boot whatsoever - very bizarre. I can see the attraction in the UP! - it's definitely got that funky city vibe going on. For now though, I still smitten with the 500 (looks and performance). I suppose it's good that we are all different;)

Looks like I'm a little late to the party :p

Our Dualogic, stop, leave it in 1st or reverse and turn engine off, and then select neutral before exiting the car. It'll stay in gear as the car is off, but then will prevent it beeping again on start up as it'll beep if left in 'D' but the gearbox is in neutral due to start up (y)

I think yours may be faulty then - it should not beep on start up.

However, when you start correctly (with the level still in Drive or Reverse) you do then have to select one or other my moving the gear stick either up/down to select 1st or right and down to select reverse as it will have automatically started up in neutral.

Nope not faulty. The car will beep whenever the gear selected (including neutral) doesn't correspond with the gear currently selected.
