The handbook does say 60K km & in the case of the MJ 30K km. On an earlier thread 'demanding use of the car' e.g. dusty conditions would warrant a change. Durukan mentioned that it would only cost him €3 for a new air filter. So with the air box coming off for a plug change coupled with the fact that a dirty filter impacts on performance and economy - IMHO I would suggest changing it.
I guess you have a point it only costs 20 euros (the air filter). I guess the greek dealers really rip me off = ) I just think that it is a bit premature to change the air filter once a year! Now my other question is what is the point of changing the pollen filter every year!!! That costs 50 euros and i really find it a waste since the AC is working just fine!
You're paying too much. In terms of change intervals, a year is definitely sensible, the flow rate through a paper filter element drops drastically as it clogs, so it's sensible to change it according to at least yearly intervals, more if operating in dusty locations.

I was charged €20 on a previous service in Ireland by the dealer. I came across this on by 'watch list' on ebay - a BMC air filter - if you have a VAT number you should be able to get it and the postage fairly reasonably. You can always go direct as well.
I recently purchased a ITG Panel filter and despite being technically the better filter (IMHO) when it gets dirty - on balance - I would recommend the BMC one in an airbox because it will enhance the rasp that you get on the 1.4 - plus it is the brand chosen by Abarth on the esseesse upgrade.
Don't expect any performance increase but after a few thousand miles when the paper one is getting more clogged the Renewable filter will perform better.
Changing the filter youself is really easy plus it can be easily cleaned and re-used. Note that the cleaners used for the foam and the cotton gauze are different and it is important not to over oil. Filer will come pre-oiled so you will not need to worry about it the first time you put it in.
