One thought is that the engine may be running lean because of the weird hose set up.

Compression test might throw up something interesting, though -- I'm guessing that no-one runs a filter on the breather pipe and a standard air box for no reason, but kids today...........

All my problems with speed and gaining 40mph all leads to the plug leads, which I have ordered and should be with me tomorrow morning. Thanks Guys.
