Factory fit HID/Xenon lights are far better at lighting up the road than any fog lights which are too low to do anything but light up the kerbside immediately in front of you, which isn't much use.

Exactly. Why do you want to light up the side of the roads? If you're looking at the side of the road or just in front of the car then you're not looking far ahead enough....

I thought that fog lights were designed for use in fog?
Isn't then when you can't see very far in front?

I wasn't talking about fog though...... I was saying that they shouldn't be used to just illuminate the side of the road on a clear night

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.
