Here's a few pics of my additional earth cable.
I fitted this, after a simple test proved it to be a solution to a no charging problem.
At first the battery was replaced with a new one, with no attention paid to type or capacity (I'd only just bought the car), and yes, it worked for a couple of days & start/stop began to work. After a few days it wouldn't start, and now starting to look deeper, and had recently found the forums, noted the recommendations for the inspection of the earth strap, from engine to chassis.
Did this and replaced as it was questionable, and I wanted to remove all doubt. Eventually changing, the Alternator, Negative battery terminal. The Negative battery terminal did seem to cure it for about 3 months, after which it stopped charging again.
After relating this story to my brother (repeatedly over several months by now) who is a diesel engine engineer, he asked me to just do one thing for him.
He said "Just get a jump lead, connect it to the negative terminal, and the other end to a good solid clean point on the engine. It will cost nothing, and prove it once and for all"
Next morning I did just that, and it instantly started charging.
I replaced the jump lead with a proper custom made cable, and it's been fine ever since.

Notice the coil in the lead before it attaches to engine, this is to ensure the cable is not stressed due to engine movement/vibration.
This is a very cheap fix for a multitude of electrical issues, and that simple test could save you a fortune in time and money.
It should be noted that without a decent earth path almost no circuit will work on any vehicle.
