Cheers. Am I correct in saying that it is black and white in that it will either be fairly cheap (battery for example) or need a new steering column? Are there things in between that could have (and are likely to have) gone wrong that won't cost the earth to repair?

OK, talking to the owner of my local garage over the weekend and he said that his diagnostic equipment could read the steering faults on my Punto and if he couldn't I wouldn't get charged.

Anyway, light was off when I left the car with them and they phoned me to say that whilst fault codes were showing they couldn't link them to the steering. The faults were :-

P0335 RPM Sensor
P0520 Oil Pressure Sensor
U1600 Electronic Key
U1601 CAN Network.

He cleared the codes but when I was pulling out of their carpark the light came on so they plugged again into the diagnostic equipment and the P0335 RPM Sensor error was logged again.

Could this error lead to the power steering warning light coming on, or is it just a red-herring and I should still go to Fiat? My car is a 2000 HGT with ABS fitted if this helps.

I had problem with my power steering the light kept coming on and off whenever it felt like it, and guess what it was a simple answer my battery needed changing, if you have anything connected to it which wasnt made to such as car amps then remove them as the battery is not powerful enough i have no problems now since changing the battery

None of those are manufacture specific errors.

Mine does it all the time, never had a problem(72K).I only use it (city) for parking as I'm crap at it:eek:

That's a big admission, T14086 ;)

Back in August 2003, I rented a Mk2 Punto from London Car Hire. My company footed the bill for three months so that I could drive all over England for business and pleasure. I thought it was rather wonderful, and London Car Hire were none too impressed that I was 23 years old and thus harder for them to insure.

Anyway I clocked up almost 3000 miles (car had 50 miles on the clock when I collected it), and I loved the CITY mode - I would leave it on at all times, even on the motorway, and it was fun to extract maximum precision from the minimum weighting.

I remember the distinct whizzing noise of the electric power steering, exactly like the Microsoft force-feedback steering wheel that a friend had on his PC at the time, and that was on an obviously-new car. This is really in response to someone else's post about the onset of noise.

Can someone confirm or deny with 100% surenes that this c* isnt the whole problem? You need to redo the contacts with high temperature stick stuff, dunno the word in english... :D

i couldnt make out the pic but if the connections are "broken" solder it and see if youv cracked it and you will be a super star :p

you will be to late to save me 100 quid for a steering columb but a super star all the same :D

one thing though a pcb is normaly like a sandwich with different circuits if there broken were gubbed:(

Acctually, I found this pic on another forum, so just wanted to ask...
Seems "plausable" :D but maybe it's just an urban myth :D

The ones on the pic seem OK, like they dont need soldering...

It was on a local forum in Serbia, so I think you wont understand anything :D

I hope it's this easy, buy will try it only when my steering fails.
It has failed 2 times as I said before, once light went on, and the steering was off, and once just the light went on, but steering worked. I turned it off, back on, and it was gone.
I'm writting this to Italian electronic, not yet a complete fault, dont wanna waste time or money...

I know what you mean, but since I bought a Punto, I've asked everyone who has it, more than half of them told me they have a simptom of steering light going on for a second, so fast that most of the time you dont manage to see it...Other half are not sure...

Since this is very sensitive part in electronic way, and Italians are a well known electricians, I think I wont solve the problem.

I now it's dangerous, but I'm strong in hands, so hope I'll save myself and others, and I've had much worse situations than that one, once I got stuck in the mud with truck and 20 soldiers in the back, I thought I was gonna slide all the way downhill and start rumbling....sometimes you musnt listen to your comanding officire, they're not the one that drive! And let me tell you, 20 soldiers can push a truck anywhere :D

Help! Advice needed re power steering

Please can someone advise - I have a 2000 Punto JTD with the power steering problem, first I noticed it pulling to the left, then the red dash light started coming on randomly with loss of PS, now the light's on permanently and no PS. Before reading this forum I took it to my local mechanic, who has diagnostic equipment. He has told me that the problem is the motor, but it could be the ECU(?) that is causing the motor to fail, therefore I need a complete steering column.

He has quoted me £225 for a 2nd hand unit with no guarantees, or £460 new unit - both of which will cost me minimum £150+ vat for fitting.

I know nothing about cars so I don't know what to do - he's told me that if I go for the 2nd hand part it could have the same problem, but at the same time is it worth paying £600+ on my car as I don't even know how much it's worth????

Please can you share your expert opinion? Is it worth double checking with my FIAT garage? Thanks :bang:
