Off Topic A little 'thump' today on the pearlescent...

P.S. 2pm caller arrived and she seemed very impressed with the car saying that it felt more planted than the 1.2s she had driven. She was gone for an hour with a 'guy who knew about cars'. Agreed on a provisional figure of €9.5K but no deposit given and wants me to wait for 2 weeks.

Hope they buy it then 2 weeks is not long to wait:)

It seems strange to me.. You should wait for 2 weeks with not any deposit given to you? :/

If she wants it she'll take it. I wouldn't put her any pressure. I could still change my mind and hang on to it. After seeing the mpg that a A500 was getting on the other section with his 24 around town and 35 on the motorway it makes you think a little.

Are these fuel consumption figures for the A500 standard or essence? As far as you haven't received any deposit yet you can change your mind and sell it to someone else instead. ;)

Those figures came from here. We're waiting for a response from the OP. Unlikely it is the esseesse model. Some appreviate it to SS but it sounds more italian with the longer name than the germanic SS.

On a particular A500 that I test drove in Nov 2010 it was showing 32.5mpg on the readout (it just arrived on the forecourt) as a average but more recently (Nov. 2011) it showed 23.5mpg from a lot of test pilots. So mpg on a A500 can vary wildly depending on how its driven.

Got a phone call last night saying that she wants the car but needs to organise finance so she's definitely interested. I'll sit tight and make the most of the time that I have left.

Good luck with the sale Michael, are you definitely getting an Abarth? :)

Thanks for that Maxi. Not overly concerned. The FW is only starting to loosen up now at just over 8K miles. Spent way too much money on it with the brake fluid etc. but I least if it's wrestled off my hands I feel that I've done the right thing in servicing it, etc.
I had to deal with an issue last night in cognito and I felt a little conspicuous in the FW. Normally I use the Marea but it needs a new battery and I couldn't trust it. An Abarth is exactly a subtle creature with the stripes etc. but if the FW goes I'll probably hold out until the new year. Have been looking at a Euro 5 S/S 1.4 ! with 135grs/km (have to import one - there are none here in the Emerald) - it sounds emission friendly (in Band B for 'us') but the 'draw' is still there for the A500. I will have my eyes wide open when and if I go to buy one. I really question the real world life 'ownership' of one and feel that you're better off getting one from new (if you could afford it) and hanging onto it.

Michael, I've traded in my 500 (which I had from new) for a Punto Abarth ex demonstrator (with only 300m on the clock!) They were selling esseesse at the same time with 1400m on, I guess nobody wanted to try 'normal' Abarth ;) It was 2K off the original price, probably wanted quick sale as the new Evo demonstrators were due to come in that week :D Since I got it, the only problem I had was coolant leak, which was fixed under warranty. Being a demo car, I tink they look after it well and I think that ex-demos are very good value...

...
Would I do it again ? Not too sure. I'll have to 'sit on it for a week or 2'.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on this.
Hope you get the result you want from your prospective buyer - even if it does mean we won't find out how durable the repair is over time.

I thought I would give some feedback on the repair...
Pleased with the result so far. Everytime I walk back to the car it is great to see a 'clean' edge on the arch and the colour seems the exact same. This would be at different times of the day and in the 'winter' sun. The wheels - no scuffs anymore - looking perfect - and in time you forget about the cost. One issue that I had when I bought the car was that the front and back bumpers seemed more creamy than the bodywork. Any FW cars that I have seen advertised have this same difference in colour. The front bumper which was not re-sprayed has this darker creamy colour. So there is a difference in the 'fade' characteristics on the FW if it is on plastic or metal. I have resisted the urge to wash the car preferring to let the paint 'harden' for as long as possible. A petrolhead that was 'running' a Car accessories shop where I looking to purchase a special wash mitt (advice taken PJ (y)) commented 'is that your Abarth outside - it looks good'. I didn't say anything.:)

The paint used on the bumpers will have a plasticiser added so that any flexing of the surface won't cause it to crack and peel. It's reasonable to suppose this could both affect the initial colour slightly and also change its fade characteristics.

Sadly any resprayed panel is also at risk from differential fade & I don't know of any way you can be sure that your perfectly matched paint will still be looking perfectly matched five years from now.

I'm glad you're happy with the result, though, and from what you've said about your intentions for the car, long term fade won't be your biggest concern right now.

Given the size of city where I live it is quite likely that I'll see the car again. Nothing is sold until money changes hands. Suspect that whoever owns the car will come on here at some future date. At least I've taken the 'sensible' option of coming clean about the repair work so there's no comeback. Firm believer in 'honesty is the best policy' and think of myself as a custodian as opposed to the owner of the car. It's rare that I've taken that type of interest in a lump of metal with 4 wheels.

Spent a little while rubbing the FW done this morning with a new chamois so that it was gleaming when I handed it over the its new owner. Wrote a little essay on how to get the most out of it and how to care for it. It was happiest coming on cam on the motorway in Sport mode and had a nice little bit of zip in its step getting about the town. OH said that she watched it from the window upstairs pulling away and followed it down the road - something that she said she has not done before. She commented that the new owner looked very happy. In the 9 months that I have this baby it only cost me €300 on depreciation but I was fortunate enough to be able to reduce the 'hit' of the upkeep costs of €250 on the service and the €380 for the wheel refurb as a business expense. All in all a very cheap car to run.
