The ECU repair place got back to me yesterday.

"I have been working on your ECU and unfortunately it is beyond repair due to an internal short circuit within the PCB which I cannot get to. I’ve checked my programming tools and I can offer a code swap to a replacement ECU which would cost £330 in total (£210 for the replacement ECU, £100 for the code swap, £20 collection & return postage fees). If this sounds ok I can get the ECU ordered in?"
I have been searching for a used one anyway and the cheapest I could find was this one so I'm happy to proceed with their option to replace and recode.
Warranty period?
I am always suspicious when told a s/h part is required, but is shortly "located".
I needed a crankshaft regrinding due to one big end damage, then rang and told crankshaft was "bent" but a s/h part had been located complete with new bearing shells for £250 !!!
I declined their offer and went elsewhere permanently, so they lost repeat business as well.

When up to your 4rse with problems and zero solutions a warranty is the last thing on your mind, but I agree one would be nice but bear in mind the ECU is possibly as old as the 2007 van it is going in, so it's not going to be very long, possibly only to work when fitted, not sure I'd give one at all at that price.

:-As @the green vanper mentioned about replacements, it would be nice to know if the one you may be getting is the later revised version :-

this is the FIAT part number. Strange thing, this ECU was replaced several times at frequent intervals :D

So there 'might' have been some issues with it :(

As far as I know it was possible to replace with the newer / newest replacement, however programming was needed. And I have no idea on which tool and which level :(

I'll take a picture of the label, but I'm expecting it ot be a direct replacement unless they're really on top of the job, if they knew there were issues Fiat should have done a recall.

You can also ask them about this frequent replacement of the part by FIAT, they shall know about it if they are in the business so should be able to find a best solution.
