I mean the trip MPG reading (the more accurate one) stops being 2 to 3 MPG higher than it really is at around the 300 mile mark, and above of course.
That's not the way it works at all.

Well I fill mine to the brim everytime and my average distance between fuel ups is 370 odd miles and it's still 10% out pretty much all of the time..... The only time when it's been spot on was driving with few stops when I was on the continent.
If you don't brim the car every time then you're not going to get accurate measurements which you can then accurately compare to your trip.
Going back to your original post; If you're jumping into a 1.2 500 after driving your 100hp Panda it is highly likely you're trying to get the same performance out of the smaller engine (whether you're aware of this or not). So if you're thrashing a 1.2 to try to match the 1.4 Panda then you're obviously not going to get great fuel economy!
You're also assuming the petrol pump you're using is 100% accurate - its an easy way to make money to have the pump giving out slightly less petrol than its telling you.
At the end of the day who cares if it is 10% or 1% or 2% out or not. Much bigger things in life to worry about!
You do realise that the petrol pumps are checked by trading standards?
If you don't care then why are you commenting in this thread?

Yes I am fully aware, a number of garages have been caught doing this though; there are a multitude of reasons why different people might get different figures. I was commenting on this thread as I was interested in the original topic re: 1.2 fuel consumption being different to that quoted.
I joined the Fiat Forum to find like minded people to rave about the 500 with; it is disappointing that there seems to be a small number of people who think it is OK to just argue for the sake of it or criticise for the sake of it. I had been planning to ask for advice on Fiat Accessories to add to my 500 when delivered but have quite frankly been put off by some of the replies to other people asking sensible questions.
We're having a discussion. He thinks that the trip computer reads more accurately when it gets over 300 miles, I don't.
Draigflag, it just doesn't make sense. There's no reason why they would want to make it so the trip computer is more accurate after 300 miles (plus it just doesn't match up with my experience). Perhaps your tanks that go over 300 miles are tanks where you haven't stopped many times.
NiceI've had over 70 mpg indicated after my 30 mile journey into work on a full tank, but I only managed to get a (crap) picture of it reading 69 point something! My average is about 50 mpg, but most of that is my wife doing short journeys around town.
Ours does anywhere between 40 and 44 mpg. What really pulls it down is the motorway. A Roads and around town it is great, but the moment it starts cruising at 80+ on the motorway 44 can soon be down to 41.
Was it 62 indicated? If it was you'll be sadly disappointed to find that it won't actually be 62mpg.....Sorry to drag up a slightly old thread, but we went away to the Hereford area this weekend and went via Abergavenny on the A40 and A479 - so quite a mixed terrain.
Over 180 miles we averaged 62mpg, which I thought was excellent, especially as there was a fair bit of second-gear ragging at times when stuck behind the odd caravan going uphill!
Now that our car's done almost 7k I've really started to notice how much the car eats up the road ahead when doing 50-60mph in fifth. Of course the advertised mpg at such speeds is in the mid-60's, but when you take into account the whole journey I'm really chuffed with it.

Probably 58/59, it's usually a few MPG optimisticwhat will it be?
