The VSS signal gets corrupted,there is a modification for the VSS wiring available that goes from the VSS to underneath the battery fuse box.Ask your dealer as they will have a bulletin on it.
Have you had any codes read from the steering ECU yet?

Steering/brakes & airbags....not worth 'skimping' on these when it's yours or someone elses life at risk.The wiring modification is dealer fit only (as far as I know it's not available to the public) so you really have no choice but to go to dealer.
If you get codes read it will prove it is the VSS wiring or steering ECU or steering torque motor posistion sensors.If its the later 2 then the system will have to be reset/recalibrated anyway.Dealers price of £40-50/p.h. is not bad compared to a plumbers/electricians rate of £70+ is it + call out fee!

can you buy torque sensors seperatly?

) torque sensors are part of the upper column.am not sure if i have the same problem; but the steering signal on the dashboard one time was on and i the steering wheel was very hard, and it wasnt on city mode. then i switched off the engine and start the car again and the light was gone, but since then am driving on city mode and honoustly am afraid to push the steering mode again!!! do i have to go and check it out with the dealer?
yes, check with dealer asap, before it locks up on you
go to your dealer if i's a wiring from vehicle speed sensor fault then the modification is free or is it I'm not sure haven't see this buliten yet haven't had a case the same as yours ether

Not free....loom section is £21 + fitting.

it basikly amounts to the speedo sender on the gearbox no geting power in time for the steering ecu to boot up and if the steering ecu gets no speed signal it looks for abs ecu on the can net as there same ecu for both abs and non abs and if you don't have abs it gets confused and puts the light on

confusing me now
If car has ABS it will have no VSS (some doblos do) as speed signal comes from wheel sensor to ABS then ECU then distrubuted to body computer/radio/cluster/EPS etc.
yes correct if the ecu receives no speed signal from vss ie it don't have one it looks on can for abs speed signal
but because power is not getting to vss quick enough on non abs models the ecu is looking for abs and causing steering light to come on due to lack of speed signal this is were the harness modification comes in it powers the vss sooner
so basikly if your car has abs you will not need this wiring modification and you have another problem with steering either motor or sensor fault

Hi i have just joined this forum and noticed this thread.
My wife has a 2001 punto 1.2 (16v Speedgear with ABS) She has had the car 3 years and for most of that time the car has had an intermittant fault with the power steering.When you turn the key to on or start, maybe once a week, the power steering light stays on, ie no power steering, turn the key back to off & try again & its fine. The light NEVER comes on when the engine is running & the steering feels fine any idea !

I agree.......but could be low voltage problem while engine is cranking (poor battery?) so you might be lucky.I'd still get error codes read for safety reasons & get them to test battery aswell,using midtronics tester.A multimeter etc only tells you battery voltage not condition under load.
sounds like ignition switch fault but get codes read to be sure

Dont think its Battery as we have got into the habbit of switching on the ignition & waiting for the light to go out before starting the engine,

Your missing my point Jim,firstly its not a diesel so no need to wait for any light to go out before starting & the battery voltage will drop when the starter is operated.Remember that battery has to operate the starter which in turn is turning over under compression a hefty lump of metal! If the voltage drops below a pre-determined voltage the steering ECU will flag a error (light on) & not operate.Switch it off & try again & light goes out makes me bit wary....my punto does this often on a cold morning start.This could of course be down to a poor engine earth aswell.
Its worth checking before going down this road of spending £5-600 on a column
(this can be backed up by getting errors read & finding low voltage errors in body computer/fuel ecu etc)
