We've all heard of the squeaking/groaning brake issue, especially on the 100HP and especially when reversing - but my 100HP has now IMO gone beyond the pail.

Forwards/backwards, high/low pedal pressure and at speeds of up to 30mph, my brakes now sound like a goose being squashed everytime I hit them.

I've had the pads out and greased them as I noticed they don't get any at the factory - just anti-squeak backings which in my experience generally don't do anything.

Anybody got any idea what else to try?! I'm even in the trade and am at a loss as to what might be causing it. Thinking I might aim it back at Fiat and see what they can come up with.

A friend of mine who works in R&D at Bentley has said they had a similar noise that was actually caused by the wheel being of the exact same resonant frequency as the brakes when applied, and that they got around it by fitting slightly redesigned wheels. I'm starting to wonder whether the 100HP might be suffering from something similar - i.e. it's not the discs/pads, but something else resonating.

Either way it's now really embarrassing but also really annoying. My car has done 12k and it's only started happening that badly in the last 2-3 weeks. I wonder whether it could be ambient temperature related?

Any ideas on how I might free the goose that's obviously stuck in my car?!

I'm stuck with you on this one. My 100HP is almost at 12k and for the past month the brakes have been squealing terribly. Unfortunately I don't actually have any suggestions for you, but at least you know you're not alone eh!

Mine started doing this recently. I've done 7.5K.

However it had a couple of days of doing it, when cruising up to a stop it would groan something rotten. Also would do it when reversing.

But, it's now fine again. Not sure why. Maybe try a few high speed stops and see if that helps?

well after replacing the rear discs and pads on my 100HP, the noise has gone, I used Eurocar Parts for parts, and when they was done, was perfect after, because Ive done ALOT! of miles in mine ive replaced them now.

I wonder if the squealing is a result of the pads wearing and the only way to get rid of it is to change them. Mine didn't do it when I bought it at 5k miles but started about 10k but only in reverse at the moment.

When I had it serviced recently the pads were noted as only 50% worn. I mentioned the squealing and the guy (who used to be a Jaguar tech) said that S types had a similar problem which was cured by fitting pads with a chamfer on the edges.

Anyone know what shape Panda pads are when new?

Sounds like I'm one of the lucky ones then. Approaching 25k miles on mine and the brakes don't make any noise at all :D

I guess this would largely depend on person's driving style and how much engine braking he/she does.

How and why would this have an effect?
Isn't it obvious? More engine braking you use, less brake pads wear, since they have less energy to dissipate. Over long time it will accumulate.
Obviously even with engine braking you will use brakes a lot. Still, they will wear less.

Obviously I understand that. I was more asking in terms of the brakes making their groaning noises.

Well, at least one of the reasons for brakes to squeak is because of the wear. And they can wear in quite different rate for different people because of above...

This may be part of the answer, replacing the pads and using pattern rather than original Fiat parts.
The rear disc brakes on my old 4x4 Climbing were much less noisy after I fitted EBC pads.
