Technical Make Your Own Ignition Timing Tool Fiat 5030/1

As promised to gordinir8 and IanEmery, but as I hope and expect will be considered useful by many other people, here is the "blueprint" for the tool.
The PDF image is a direct scan of the item, which if printed at A4 should be an exact template.

It's made of 2mm thick steel-plate and the two tubes are 30mm in length and have criss-crossed slots which are cut 8mm into the ends of the tubes. The diameter and wall thickness can be seen in the scan. I haven't tried it yet but it is evidenly very easy to use and should promote more accurate understanding of ignition timing.

That's nice thanks for sharing, do you think it is necessary to scan it togeather with a ruler to have it for scale ref?

Thank you, Peter. This is a true example of the friendship and spirit of helpfulness of forum members towards other owners.

I believe this forum must rate among the very best anywhere on the Internet with the best membership. I belong to several other forums and this is the only one where there is never a cross word or any trivial backbiting so a hearty “Well Done” to all.

Might I suggest to the forum moderators that this posting be made a sticky as part of forum resources?

Excellent idea Thomas; I never thought of that. :bang: I did print the PDF and checked against the actual item, but watch this space and I will upload a version next to the steel rule when I brave the snow and rain to the garage later.

Well I guess we are going to have to do something about that then...
We can't have a forum where people get along... what ever next...
I mean there's that chap (what ever his name is) up norf of the boarder that keeps upsetting me by driving his car almost daily and then having the audacity to post pictures gloating at how much more beautiful it is up there...
but that is a lovely little bit of kit... will ask someone if they can make a batch when I get back ...
but be he'd be there wanting a "Weeee Dram"

Peter i was in the queue waiting to buy my IRON MAIDEN tickets :slayer: (little cars name is Eddie after all) while i reed your post so i didn't got the time to write more but i got an idea and maybe i can make you rιch also with this idea

It would be nice if someone can take this tool and make cnc copies out of it. You can sell thousands around the global and be rιch... maybe famous if not already
Seriously i will try to make a copy out of aircraft aluminium and use it, it is nice to have. Ill post it back when i am done. Now i am going to the garage and change a broken dynamo pulley :bang:

Additional PDF with a metric ruler so that you can calibrate your paper copy.

Also the tubing is 15mm outer and 11mm inner, if you are a perfectionist.

I think I had better neutralise that then by getting some more recent photos of wet blizzards posted. With a bit of luck, that will put you all off; I wouldn't want to be responsible for the place being over-run with classic Fiat 500's.
Of course, we have all the best "Wee drams" as well.

I need a lie down now before I start posting about the cylinder head puller; it's even more exquisite but probably less useful.:bang:

I love it when the talk starts to get dirty...

I know from the factory books there are lots of these specialist tools...
obviously some more useful than others...
would be nice to see what people have got and see if we could get some remade...

Don't get me started.

This one has the slight variation of two extra holes which are to allow the carburetttor studs to remain in place.

Hi Patinated Peter,
Thank you for sharing these images of the tool. The tool is extremely rare here in Japan or exceedingly expensive if found, so that I wanted to make it by myself. Thanks to your images photocopied in real size, I will be able to get it soon (probably made of Aluminum). Here's a plan I drew and made into a PDF file for printout. I drew this for my own sake but people might need this, I suppose. In case of printing out, the scaling must be 100% in order to reproduce the image correctly.

That's amazing...the positive power of the Internet! Great work translating that into a working drawing.
Although there are many ways to get the timing right, if everyone driving a Fiat 500 in standard tune used this technique to check the accuracy of timing I'm certain their cars would run better and with greater reliability and fewer problems.

First class effort Koji---good technical drawing. If anybody DOES decide to have a few of these tools made, count me in for one please. I know 20 deg is 14mm, but having the correct tool to pop onto the car can only help----again, well done Koji

I will have a go at making a printable 3D model for this.
I can then print one send it to someone to compare against the original and then either put the file on here, if allowed, or post it on thingiverse (3d printing website) where it will be free to download and get your own models made.

Couple of questions:
- from the 0degrees marking, what angle do you make the lower mounting hole?
- does anyone want any other angles marked on the timing tool?

It may take a while as i will need to contract in my CAD expert/chief mechanic (for the intersting jobs) who is 9......

I printed one the other day!
I was going to wait until I could find my tippex to white fill the text.

This is made from PLA which has a low melting point. I mat get initial timing right, but I expect it will get a bit 'melty' before I manage to set advance timing!

I aim to make one out of a stainless sheet bolted to two mild steel tubes. We have a small laser machine at work so I can print the letters on.

If I can find a way to cobble a few together I'll keep you all posted.
