Hello, my wiper arm was snapped by a vandal. I've bought a second hand arm to fit. I've removed what remained of my wiper arm but lost the nut in the process! Are they standard steel nuts and washers that are used? Does anyone know what size? Or is it something exotic that I need to get from a dealer? Thanks.

It's a standard M8 x 1.25 nut

Also called "M8 course"

Toolstation is normally the cheapest if you don't want to use online, now Wilkinson's has gone here in the UK

If you want to go down the OEM route here's the part numbers

The washer is a M8 wave washer

Might come under different names Wavy, springy and so on

At a pinch I'd just use an ordinary washer and bend it slightly before fitting

Thank you for your fast reply.

Would you use a stainless steel nut, or since it is covered by a cap, is that not necessary?

The washer that I lost was flat from what I remember but perhaps someone had changed it and it was not the original.

Thanks again.

Ah, Wilkinson's greatly missed by many I'm sure.

I've got a couple of those "multipac" type boxes of nuts and bolts from both of the budget supermarkets and I've seen them in the likes of B&M. Folk need to be aware stuff like this is Ok for the likes of a wiper arm retaining nut but don't even think of using one on a safety critical component - like a track rod end for instance - as past experience has revealed them to be "soft".

I have boxes of nuts and bolts and washers, both new and reclaimed, which I've collected over the years so this is rarely a problem for me. However it might be worth asking one of the small garage workshops near you as there are vans which go round them selling good quality multipacs of this sort of thing and I find they are happy to either just give you a nut or take a small donation to funds for one. Industrial trading estates are another good place to look. Companies repairing/reconditioning domestic appliances, Lawnmowers, etc, etc, will be very likely to have this sort of thing.
