I'm not sure what type of local company would be able to laser cut one for me :/

a metal fabricators could do that fairly easily ( visible KEY).. it's the spring mechanism for a controlled "unwind" that would take a little more work..:(

in real terms the $250 isn't ridiculous, ..is it METAL - or plastic that looks like a metal key..?? :confused:

250 dollars must only be just over 150 quid to us. Seems quite reasonable to me by the time you make one (Alloy) and get all the motor parts I doubt you would be much cheaper taking time into consideration.

why not use a wiper motor and a rheostat from the heater motor?
i reckon i could build one in 2 hours and fit it in the rear wiper hole on a punto, done by lunch:D

As S and B said I think they are motorised, not actually clockwork
