Technical Will a 2016 ducato M40 gearbox fit a 2008

I have a 2008 fiat ducato with a 160hp 3.0 Iveco engine running an M40 gearbox. unfortuantly for me the gearbox is dying .. 3 gear crunch and 6th gear whine. So im looking to replace it. I have found a gearbox which looks the same but its from a 2016 2.3 fiat ducato- its advertised as an M40 box ... but my concern is that it
A- might not fit
B- drive shafts might differ
C- might not handle the 3.0 engine?
I know they might seem like daft concerns.. But it appears having a gearbox replaced in 24hours is a better option than having my gearbox removed - sent off.. repaired when the specialist can fit it in, sent back to the garage and then the garage installing it when theyre next free.. I expect this method to not see my van back for about two weeks ... ( just incase you wander why i dont get mine removed and repaired etc)

If someone knows what years of M40 gearboxes would fit a 2008, please let me know , thanks

Can't help with which your specific question but a couple of other aspects to consider before committing are whether the gear selector mechanism on the outside of the gearbox is the same and maybe more importantly if the internal gear and final drive ratios are the same.

It gives types and fitments, the M40 seems to be a series of boxes fit across the range and eBay listings, from remanufactured, seem to have semi-auto and manual. The 2.3 semi-auto had faults associated with its ecu rather than the box. Not sure about the manual 2.3 box as I’ve only encountered the autoboxes

Where is the box you’ve found coming from as a great many remanufactured ones are from companies in Holland and Germany?!? Remanufactured means reconditioned some have quite long warranties so getting the right one is a must…many now not delivering to UK, I wonder why

If you look at the parts diagram the 5speed and 6speed have different part numbers for some of the selector forks and shafts, obviously, so I think you’re going to have to bite the bullet and actually speak to someone to get the right box for your ducato (although it is shared across the 3.0l PSA as well)
These guys are very knowledgeable, although they’re breakers, they know their stuff

thanks for the reply, yes the gear selection fittings look identical and the end plate is identical to mine

The box ive seen is UK based and is not refurbed- but i want to check as tbh i have seen some cheaky sellers who put ' 20k' and they dont mean from new, but from rebuilt.

Thankyou, the box im looking at is a 6 speed , M40, looks externally identical, but is on a newer 2.3L ducato. Ill contact those and see if theyll help clarify if the box im looking at will fit. another post on this thread mentioned about ratios, but tbh if it works sweet and everything fits ( drive shafts) i dont mind if its a bit revy. My box i cant see any numbers on it anywhere to idenitfy its model- its like Fiat didnt bother casting I.D code on it lol

There’s always a number but on boxes that have multitudes of fitments, it doesn’t mean a right lot, at least on the ivecos there’s usually a plate!

right on my gearbox, which is a 2008 . 3.0 ducato with a 6 speed m40... in all the places where there should be numbers, there is nothing, belll housing has no casted embossed letters, gearbox has no engraved serial number.. so im at a loss to try and match it beyond physical looks. My concern is that ill buy a box that looks the same, because i cant match it via a code/serial number, to find that the driveshafts dont fit the bell housing, maybe some issues with the clutch alignment( output shaft issues) and based on a post above that the ratios might be an issue ..
ATM this gearbox im looking at is vry temping as its a fraction of the cost of a £1500-£1900 refurbed- exchange boxes ive seen
