Technical whistling sound

Technical whistling sound

Ah, i've been hearing this every time it's been cold now for weeks. Hubbie heard for first time today and said what's that whistling noise.

I thought it was just a normal sound - should I take it in or not? (yes I'd describe it as a sort of fan belt noise too!)

Mine was *reasonably* obvious below 2000 rpm when accelerating (although fan and mp3 covered it up). It was odd in that it was a soft fan belt noise, and only occured once engine was *fully* warmed up, although it did start once the weather turned colder, and was getting worse with the cold weather this week.

Morning everyone!

Well, the symptoms people have suffered on their cars sound the same as what we've had over the past 4 weeks. I didn't think too much of the initial rattling as it was always within the first 5-10min (but not before the first 5min!), and also with it being linked to the cold engine I wasn't especially worried - cold engines always sound crap!:D

The whining has got noticeably worse over the past three days and it is also hanging around (albeit very slightly) when the engine is warm. It doesn't affect performance but I guess if it is linked to the alternator then it would be prudent to book in to the garage.

Dealer suggested it might be the breather pipe instead, so we'll see what happens next week...

Just as a further note to my post above - my dealer (Griffin Mill nr Pontypridd) just called me now and I will take the car in tomorrow; seems likely to be the belt tensioner but will also have a look at oil levels etc

Anyway fair play to them, I was promised a call back today and they asked me when it would be convenient for me to come up, so a (y) to them!

Anyone had any updates on this I have a 2011 500c 1.2 with 4k on clock and mine is making this noise in the first few mins of driving for about 10-15 mins unless very cold and stays all the journey, dealer aren't sure wot it is but have been great and said leave it over night and they'll try it, just wonder if anyone managed to cure it thanks

Hi Dean,

I don't think there is a cure for it to be honest. It seems to be a weird quirk in some 1.2s but my gut feeling is that it is not anything terminal (based on your comments below as they sound identical to what I used to experience).

I also experienced this on a Ford KA courtesy car back in August which has exactly the same Fiat 1.2 engine in it. It only had a few thousand on the clock

However I have been using Shell V-Power since earlier this year, and when the weather has been cooler since then it hasn't made this noise any more. See page 6 of this thread:

https://www.fiatforum.com/500/222150-shell-v-power-6.html

Obviously I can't say 100% that this has resolved the issue, but for me it is too much of a coincidence.

Either way do let us know what your dealer says, will be interesting to see if they can nail it for you.

Thanks for the reply I will wait for the weather to get a little colder and then take it in so I don't have to wait for it to cool down to do it as I notice the other night when it was colder it did it all the time will let u know

My 1.4 Sport also suffers from some squeaking/whistling when the weather becomes colder (at least for the first twenty minutes after start-up) - i have always attributed this to the alternator or auxiliary belt tensioner.

My previous car was a 1.4 Punto Mk 2.5, which also did the same in cold weather (never had any ill effects though); so perhaps this is just a 'feature' of the engine/alternator combination.

My 1.4 whisles around 3-4000 rpm when the engine is nice and warm and i have pushed it a bit! To be honest, I feel the engine does this when it is at its most healthy! I enjoy the sound!

On another note for some reason just before 3000 rpm it makes like a BRMM HUMMM noise and it has been doign this ever since i got it basically, and is more noisy when the engine is cold. Maybe i pushed it too hard in its early days? The car went to service and nothing is wrong with it and it never gave me any trouble before or after service with the noise so i never investigated it much. I just feel it a part of the car's character.

Thanks guys may well just live with the noise if it's nothing like one post said they like the noise and to think I got the noise for free when others are paying extra for the twin air just for the engine note. :) cheers
