Hi,
I have just bought a 1990 Fiat Ducato 2.5td motorhome. Can someone please advise what is the best engine oil to use i.e. synthetic or mineral. Sorry but there was no manual.

Cheers

Hi all
sorry to intrude but would 10w30 semi/syn be o,k to use in a 96 fiat ducato 2.5 tdi motorhome in a service, if not any advice please.

Thanks

Make sure is a proper rate diesel oil, my local discount store sells 10/40 semi sytnh thats an pre 08 A1/B1. Its like sewing machine oil I'd only use it for my lawnmower.

I asked my Fiat workshop last week regarding my 2008 2,3 JTD and they advise to change engine oil and filter every year and use 5W-40 oil fulfilling following standard:
ACEA A3/B4 european standard
API SM/CF american standard

I never by oil from dealers or petrol stations but from low price chains (like Biltema in Scandinavia, ca 5 euro per litre for 5W-40 syntetic oil fulfilling relevant standards). Buy cheap oil and change at least once a year and do the job by yourself! I have practiced this for almost 50 years and have never had oil-related problems.

I have been using Morris 10W/50 synthetic for 6 years now. Its a great oil for older engines, it has the benefits of synthetic but is abit thicker for older engines. For the last 2 years I have also been adding some Redex 'Stop Leak' which has reduced the start-up smoke from the worn valve stem seals which were allowing abit of oil to sneak by whilst it was stood for the long periods which motorhomes are.

Morris oils are available online but can be obtained from Motor Factors if you can find a local one which stocks it.

I have also been using their SS80 gearbox oil with good results. Dont use a synthetic oil in the gearbox as it attacks the phosphur bronze parts Fiat used in the gearbox, which can trace its roots back to the Ark ! but which seems to be outlasting the ones fitted to the newer models
