Which Broadband to chance to??

Aol was my first internet so we had them since dial up back in... 2000 i was 10 at the time as my screename was bertie101010. then went to broadband. I think carphone warehouse bought them and started offering its own internet which was really AOL. another reason we left aol was because we were using wireless before they were offering it as a package scam and suddenly 1 day our router could no longer share the internet and we had to use ethernet cables. Dont no if they did something to stop us using our own wireless? but it never worked with aol again.

My brother is on bt and thinks its really good. theyve given him a housephone... and this pda device that runs windows.

Sureley virgin just put in the cables for you? what are they doing when they have wires runnin all the way down the road to the boxes?

If youve had cable tv before then you will have the cables outside your house.

Im not quite sure on cable at this house as there is no brownish box on our outside wall..

They was digging outside the front of the house where the little circle cable thing is on the pavement when they told me that 40 meters of cable was missing.. and this is due to the gas works we have had outside of the house.

If your property is beyond the existing VM cabled area it can be very difficult to get an addition to services as the Planning / Construction guys are capped for spend, unless there is sufficient interest locally to earn VM a payback for investment, extension to networks is very expensive. If you do have an individual drop-cable to your property and the current build goes past your house, but that cable is damaged VM should replace it.

All totally depends on how many potential customers would take the service if new build is required.

Like stated above its not a damaged cable its a cable missing from under the pavement because of gas works re newing the gas pipes.

Tiscalli were rubbish for me, Was on 8mb package and was rare when it got up to 1mbs

I've been with Tiscali (S**tscali when their service plays up) for some time now. I get between 3 - 4 Mbps despite being on an "up to 8 Mbps" service (I only live a mile from the exchange) and their internet service is often temperamental with dropped connections occuring rather too frequently.

However...

For about £20 a month inclusive I get:

1. Free line rental
2. Up to 8mbps unlimited broadband
3. Anytime free calls to all UK landline number (24hrs/ day, 7 days/week)
4. FREE INTERNATIONAL CALLS to 10 selected countries - ANYTIME!

The country list for free international calls are:

  1. USA (includes mobiles)
  2. Canada (includes mobiles)
  3. Australia
  4. New Zealand
  5. France
  6. Ireland
  7. Spain
  8. Italy
  9. Germany
  10. Netherlands

Therefore for the price I'm paying I've yet to find a better deal so I tolerate the sometimes slow speeds and dropped connections. I often ring friends in the USA so the international call deal is very useful, as is the anytime free calls to UK land lines. Mind you, I haven't checked other ISP providers so don't know if any others are doing competitive deals for similar or less.

They should fix that and reclaim the cost from the Gas board, PM me I may be able to help.

O2 / BE unlimited are f***ing awesome. No / very little down time, awesome sync speeds and fast throughput and low latency unlimited downloads* and its cheap! what more could you want?

*fair use policy applies but I hit in excess of 300gb of traffic one month (don't ask!) and they didn't so much as send an email!.

i use the same, i think i'm sync'd at around 20mb - pulls 1.6mb/s on torrents, i've never had an email off them re fair use and only had two outtages - which they informed me of before they happened!

Well ive finally got my solution now thanks to your opinions i shall be getting my phone line through another provider and getting the internet from Be unlimited as i know they are really good because my mum has had them at her house and they had a downtime one time and because of there downtime they didnt charge her for the rest of that whole month because it was all there fault so this provider suits me just fine. Also ive done an online test with them and they have said that my phone line can support 8mb which im happy with considering with my current provider im only getting like 3.5mb yet paying for a 24mb package.. but thats ADSL24 (Entanet) for you lol

Yes theres "support" 8mb and then actually getting it. Depends very much on distance from exchange, noise on your phone line and weither you got a fax machine on your ADSL line lol. I wouldn't expect much more than 3.5mb on BE either tbh as I believe its your line quality limiting you (Entanet is a ADSL2+ package IIRC), but we shall see.

If it is still poor post your line stats and I can recommend some tips to try and boost it a bit (y)

Depends how you connect. If your using a router you should be able to see a stats page for your DSL connection heres a good guide how to find out!:-

with Be being LLU tho, it'd be on a different dslam - which yeah would still be subsebtable to noise on the line, but if its a better bit of kit to begin with than BT's then it might help :D

hmm actually mine only syncs at 17.6mb.. when did that drop.. oh well, 1.6mb/s is fine for me :)
