Technical Wheel wobble and banging

Hi guys, just got my 02 sei sporting on the road, as in driving down the road my car is making a really loud banging, I thought this would be due to the shocks however, whilst my car was parked this morning I gave the wheel a good push and shove about and there is quite a lot of free play, do you guys recon this is bushes or maybe something else?

check for play at 9 and 3 'o clock ..then 6 + 12 o'clock positions on wheel,

different components will give free play in different directions.. let us know what you find.. actually banging sounds like a LOOSE component / wheel itself !!

It's the rear wheel, not checked 9&3 o'clock but 6&12 it has free play, front end is okay as I sorted out arb last week,

could well be JUST a wheel bearing..,

lift wheel and spin it to check for odd noises..grumbling..,

"Banging" is a little odd though,

Wheel feels like it's flapping about, don't sound like a wheel bearing but will check in the morning, supposed to be doing a 120 mile journey tomorrow but don't quite fancy risking my wheel falling off on the a19 lol

I will check agin in the morning, sounds plausible though, I will tighten the nut under the hub and wheel nuts in the morning and see what happens, would I have free play in the wheel if it is the bushes?

Check the hub nut tightness as well had similar before and turned out I hadn't tightened it enough

I did it last week when sorted the brakes out, it was a castleated nut think it was 32mm is is supposed to have a split pin because mine didn't have one in it

Nope just a normal 32mm nut can't remember the torque

I will check autodata in the morning, if its not the hub or wheel nuts what do you think it would be ?

being Castellated implies using a split-pin-YES,
however a lot of them use a Nylok nut.. is there a small hole in the shaft for a pin?

I wouldn't think it would BANG..but you'll soon see with the wheel off,

Rear wheel, prime suspect must be the trailing arm bushes.

They make lot of banging when they've gone.

If you took the nut off last week, did you remember to put the thick washer back on.

Away from home, so no manual to hand.

30mm rear axle bolt is a crush nut, not castellated. Should have a thick (3-4mm) washer.

If the bolt is wrong, be very suspicious. If not torqued up correctly will have same effect as a shot wheel bearing.

After that -- and especially if over bumps -- suspect the trailing arm bushes.

After a good inspection today it turns out its a wheel bearing that's properly knackered, will replace it in the next few days and see if it solves the problem
