Changed my 2014 4x4 for a 2019 4x4 Cross. Only 9K miles and not seen a salted road yet so have been spending a few days cleaning everything and applying Lanoguard everywhere.
came across this behind the nearside wheel arch and no idea what it is and if it should have something screwed into it? The inside has corroded quite bad but it is exposed to everything on the road.
does anyone have an idea and if so what’s it’s purpose and is there a cap or part missing from it?
thanks
Martin

An unhelpful answer here: no idea! I don't seem to have anything like that on mine - not even any pipework running in that area (but mines a diesel, if that makes a difference). Does look a bit 'open plan' though...
Yes I agree it looks like there should be something else attached. I’ve emailed the manager of the garage I bought it from for an answer

Yep its a thing. I have a feeling that someone did identify this in a post a year or two back. My 2017 car had one but I have not looked at the 2019 . I dont think there is anything missing.

I just throw my hands in the air and do Italian mutterings at such things. I have a feeling it may be emissions related.

Could it be part of an unfinished Warp drive system

Ive now got to go and look and see if I have one.

My thoughts were flux capacitor lol

Mine (2019 4x4) has one of these my bet is its either a drain or a breather but I cant yet see what its connected to. If you get an answer do let us know.
It’s strange as the base has rusted badly as it’s totally open to all the muck off the road. That’s why I thought it ad a cover missing.

It looks a bit grimy but also looks the same shape as mine so nothing missing I think.

After a bit of lateral thinking, and then Googling, I believe this is a newer version of the damper in the hydraulic lines to the clutch - you can see it in this screen shot of an Italian parts supplier (first image)

Older models had a spiral of tubing in about the same place (second image) , presumably to do a similar job.

Well done on your detective work. So far the garage haven’t a clue and have come back to ask where exactly is the item. If they couldn’t work that out from the two pics I’m pretty concerned for their abilities . I’ve sprayed Lanoguard in it as wa a rusty. Hope that won’t affect it

Damper? I think that's very likely. In fact my boy's Punto has a similar device in it's clutch line which I found when we (Harrison's Garage and me) were involved in fitting a new master cylinder - a bit of a pig of a job on newer Puntos as, unlike the earlier Grande, you have to partially dismantle the pedal cluster to get the cylinder out. Lot's of bloody fingers involved (blood as in the red sticky stuff!) took us a bit of head scratching and a few cups of tea before we settled on what it was. It's a very simple device with a diaphragm in the middle, brake fluid on one side and a spring on the other.

So putting a little Lanoguard grease in it shouldn’t hurt do you think?
